Another HoFingolfin, hich evasion and decent prot. I've just found the Great Spear of Melkor, and am wondering whether to pick start using it, and turn myself into another Knock-back character, or stick with lighter weapons. I've got a =Str+1, and =Dam+1, which makes heavy weapons (such as the great axe in my inventory) somewhat tempting.

Will pause my playing for a while, and mull over the decisions :)

<3 melkor, although it's more fun on earlier levels where it actually works against most things, and where ancient emerald serpents / ancient spiders don't roam :)

With the str and dam ring, I think you'd get 1d18? Against poison-vulnerable things and with a crit or two, things can get rather hilarious, although you do get a lot of scenarios where damage looks like 0, 2, 0, 60! lol

Melkor is pretty fun, but the poison vulnerability is pretty nasty at later levels. I had a character recently with Melkor as a Xmas present ( http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=15402 ) - it was a lot of fun, but when I found Sirion I changed that that very happily (although that's partly because the Knockback-Opportunist interaction is currently broken (though will be fixed in 1.2.1 I am told)).

Of course, if I just wield my great axe with my two rings I'm hitting for 4d10, which is always fun :D

On 9.1.2014 16:31 debo wrote:
What do you mean by knockback->opportunist being broken? I thought that interaction was deliberately nerfed to prevent chain-knockback-opportunisting?

4d10 is also fun, yes. :)

Behaviour has regressed so you get an attack of opportunity on a knockbacked enemy. This is a bug (as this behaviour is brokenly good), and will be fixed in 1.2.1 :)

Dumped Melkor in the end, mostly because I played with it so recently :)

Have just encountered Belegwath, and am wondering whether I should risk going toe-to-toe. I have no !Quickness, so it's slightly risky (though I do have enough exp to take Sprinting). Unfortunately, I'm currently trapped between him and unexplored dungeon.

God Belegwath is Dark. I ended up running because there were some nasties I couldn't see. Found _revelations on the level above, which is always handy. ID'ed by use, to reveal that there are 2 (!) Enchanted forges on this level, with 3 and 4 uses respectively. Enough to make me consider going for some smithing - any suggestions for what I should forge if so?

In any case, I'll do some exploring, and hopefully get a bit more exp to spend if I do decide to Smith ;)

Turkano turned up. Took *forever* to kill (and a couple of 'erbs of rage for the escort). Quite fun, though :)

On 9.1.2014 17:53 meneldil wrote:
Level pretty much cleared (including both forges). 6k exp in the bank, which would let me get 9 points in smithing and 2 abilities, giving (with my gloves) 14 smithing, +4 from the forges. 18 doesn't seem that strong - any thoughts on whether it's worth it?

I guess the natural thing to do would be to craft some kind of artifact feanorian lamp, and another artifact of either a ring or an amulet? (I guess I could use the 4th forge use on a plain ring/amulet.) Artifact armour items are also possible. Again, though, I'm not sure I can get much worth it for 18 difficulty.

On the plus side, you would have Smithing to use if you find more forges later. It is a lot of experience though.

I ended up not spending any on Smithing. If I were Feanor I would have, but it felt like too much experience (and time!) for too little gain.

Pretty good levels at 900ft and 950ft. I found the shield of Angrod, which is pretty good for this char (I had been carting a kite shield of frost around, but the (-2) wasn't great). Silverhand (which I think are new?) give me +1 dex for an awesome glove spot, and I've found an amulet of con+2, which frankly makes my HP a little silly.

Scatha was fun to kill - I forgot to equip my crown of defiance, and got entranced then bitten for 44, which wasn't nice! However, insane HP saved this from being a game-ender, and I healed up and slew the worm.

I think that, sadly, I'm going to ditch the boots of Taur-nu-Fuin and the amulet of Tinfang-Gelion, though I may invest in some singing shortly. (Slaying + Sharpness for Throne Room?)

The main slots I'd like to improve before heading down are armour and probably helmet (though this helm of brilliance has done sterling work in letting me see Gwathraukar, another source of rFire would be nice).

Descended to the Throne Room. Just shy of 6k experience in the bank; I'll probably take Exchange Places and then Sprinting, as they both help a lot on the ascent.

What's the curse for taking more than one silmaril in this version?

I had significant difficulty in the Throne Room, trying to get a Silmaril from the Iron Crown, so made do with one. Am thinking I might try to kill everyone at the Gates, though :D

The route up was a little hairy to begin with, charging round the dungeon with Morgoth on my heels and not knowing where I'm going or what nasty I'm about to bump into. However, Exchange Places and Sprinting really make it easy, and my high will and Free Action made Morgoth's song of binding not-too-scary. I also then found _Revelations and several _Recharging, which made the rest of the ascent pretty straightforward. Didn't have to spend any exp on the way up, so have almost 10k to spend here at the surface.

One observation: in the ascent, when V is on my heels, if I am somewhere where it is obvious that there is a secret door, I usually don't want to find the door, so I can smash through it with my mattock of Belegost, rather than find it and then spend some turns unlocking it or bashing it down. This feels really odd - why can I smash it with my mattock only if I don't know it's there? (An obvious solution is to let you 'tunnel' through doors. OTOH, being able to smash through doors with a mattock on the way up may make it rather easier/V's song not-so-scary, so I can understand not wanting to do that.)

I have slain the guardians at the gates, and beaten back all those who poured forth from the depths of Angband.

That was pretty fun - I started off using potions and herbs of rage, but realised pretty quickly that they were unnecessary :) (Though with !Con and ,Rage I had 213 HP, which was pretty fun.)
