Strange character. Wasn't really heading for a particular build so haven't taken any abilities other than the utility ones (+hardiness) so far.

Having found Aeglos I was thinking about going all stealthy and stabby, but now Anglachel has just entered the mix...

Would have been great to go with Anglachel and offhand Aeglos - but I believe that is no longer possible.

I'd happily replace most of my other slots (bar Finrod of course), but they all have served me well somehow so far. rFire soon is a must.

Any thoughts are welcome :)

I'd be tempted to go for a light-polearm character with Aeglos (but that's mainly because I've never really seen such a character before, and I'd like to know if it's viable ;) ). You've had some lovely finds, Anglachel and Aeglos are both solid weapons (I wish my current character on the laddder had either of them!)

As ever, my feeling is that Flanking + ZoC is lots of fun to play, and this character could easily do that ;)

One noticeable thing is that you've doubled up free action - if you're not going for song then, since you have Finrod, you might want to ditch Barahir. OTOH, rPoison is handy (though you could replace with the ability), and Este is occassionally handy. Agree that rFire is essential - you've not spotted any rings of frost?

In any case, you've found some solid kit - enjoy!

If i was deadset on killing V, I would just go all-in with anglachel, get rapid attack and song of slaying and Constitution and just murderize everything. With double free action and 6 more will you'd be pretty good in the throne room, I guess.

If I wanted to have fun, I'd probably two-hand aeglos, try to get melee as high as possible, momentum + get as much strength / damage as I could, and stab dudes. (maybe even with assassination). Even without subtlety, a few crits at 1d15-1d17 + an extra damage die against most things is p.fun. It might even work against V without sharpness, if you got slaying bonus high enough.

On 9.1.2014 16:06 Psi wrote:
No, no =Frost or any other source of rFire yet! :/

I had to take Crowd Fighting after getting surrounded by Tevildo, Oikeroi, a couple of Kemen and some trolls. Had to play carefully which is against my nature, but got through.

The flanking, ZoC build is always fun, but I guess my eyes are on V and I wonder is there is better use for my XP. That battle is also one of the reasons for doubling up on FA as I don't want to be slowed.

Angrist has now popped which always helps and at least I now have a Warm cloak to protect my valuable potions.

Some +3 forging gloves were bestowed on me too and I may yet be tempted to go the smithing route...

On 9.1.2014 16:23 meneldil wrote:
Ah, if you're wanting to take out the big V then Anglachel would be the natural choice. Sadly he's pretty much impossible to knock back, otherwise I might suggest that. Rapid attack and double free action is definitely pretty strong. It's a shame that Barahir takes up one of the slots for a ring of str/dam ;)

Down to 850' and still no rFire. Managed to take out an ancient S all the same. Also took out a D - thankfully a cold one, but he was guarding the mithril corslet and better gloves so thought it was worth a go.

Out of ~Rage which is concerning.

Why do you need the shield with your evasion?

Relevant with your evasion: Don't take riposte - until it is fixed.

Does rC+ actually help with potion popping? I didn't think it did

On 9.1.2014 17:24 Psi wrote:
@taptap - well the shield was my only source of rFear and also helps against elemental damage. Really need a HelmDefiance!

@debo - maybe I'm wrong then. Potions are a real worry though - seem so rare in this version.

That level was mad. Vallach came out of nowhere and then Lungorthin appeared out of the cat fortress too. Killing all the cat assassins and vampire lords etc went on forever. At least I have a =Frost now though!

On 9.1.2014 17:48 Psi wrote:
Finally decided to go the power route and ditch any forging stuff. Soooo much easier to kill stuff now - especially when I remove my shield. I can see some artefact mithril gauntlets on this level - I am intrigued!

Yes, resistances help with inventory damage. The chance per item is proportional to the damage you received, which depends on the resistances.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you do in the throne room and beyond.

Never died to that before. I had no idea I was in danger. Never really registered that darkness breath could do damage - never mind that much damage. I was just thinking about getting trees if I couldn't kill the Gwath after a few turns...

On 9.1.2014 18:10 meneldil wrote:
! Youch.

How much did it do? I think the light level on your square counts as the dark resist for darkness attacks, so they're only scary when you can't see anything!

On 9.1.2014 18:19 Psi wrote:
@meneldil - Not sure exactly, but I had more than 20HP and with my evasion and protection, nothing had hit me anything near that hard since I can remember - hence I hadn't even considered healing yet. It was a 4d10 attack and my roll against it was 1-3...

I had 4 light radius, keen senses and inner light too.

Really gutting as that was a really strong char.

On 9.1.2014 18:24 debo wrote:
I think your resistance depends on the light level on your square, not your total light radius? Could be wrong.

But yes this is why i always get trees now

On 9.1.2014 18:25 debo wrote:
Oh sorry, meneldil already mentioned the light on your square thing. I'm guessing you had no resist to it (light level 1 on square) when it breathed. Not sure if you get a vulnerability if your square's light level is < 0, but i'm guessing yes

On 9.1.2014 18:32 Psi wrote:
Appreciate that it is light level on square - was just commenting that it was not like I was scrimping on light or anything. Painful way to go when I had so much healing and xp in reserve.

That is unfortunate. Two darkness monsters at the same time can be particularly bad.

Amused by your falling into a chasm while confused though -- that sounds fun! You know you can just pass if you need to while confused.

Did you use Leaping from your boots at all?

On 9.1.2014 20:12 Psi wrote:
@half - yes, if I am being careful then I just rest when confused. Can't remember if I was just hammering the keys or didn't realise I could fall in when confused - nice that you can though!

I used leaping to get a potion of quickness I couldn't otherwise have reached but that was it.
