This character was going much better, until I delved too deep, and awoke things I could not control. In particular, awaking the Balrog of Sudden Flame while being quite a distance from a staircase was Less Good. I was going to try to find my way back up, and then I found myself entering a Vault. I'll probably run away (but the mention of a Horde makes it rather tempting!)

It's Glaurung and his friends. There is some nice stuff, but unless you can lead Glaurung away you won't get much. If you run in and run out you might get an object or two, though.

Yes, you now get a message on entering a vault. I wasn't sure about it at first, but it is atmospheric and makes it more clear that you have found something interesting and tempting/scary.

I think it's pretty cool. Also helps not-very-strong characters avoid some of the nastier encounters, which is probably a good thing.

Thanks! I just found a [-1,1d10] Gavlorn Armour of protection, so even better on that front now :D

Also found a ring of dex +1, which I'm considering swapping for one of my current rings. (I welcome thoughts on this front!)

I've just been wandering around with my Axe and Shield for a bit, and found it a little harder going that with my greatsword (possibly partly because I was mostly fighting the Elfbane and his escort, where prot is less helpful). I'll keep on trying them. I've just found another staff of treasures, and using it shows there's a (-1,3d7) greatsword of fury on this level. Pretty tempting to get that, though I don't have any staves of sanctity atm.

(Another dump).

Turkano fell pretty quickly to my Great Axe of Nargothrond, unsurprisingly. I took the unusual step of retreating to a room (rather than using a corridor) and then dancing round his escort until they fled (which wasn't long) before turning my attention to Turkano. It seemed to work.

It's there, but that's generally fine for my character - with knockback, them moving towards me is often useful. Might be less helpful on the escape, I guess.

Now at the point of either going down to the Throne Room, or doing another 900/950ft level to stock up on potions, and hopefully find some better gloves/ a better weapon / _revelations. I have _treasures, so this probably isn't a terrible plan.

I love Flanking/ZOC/Charge/KB characters like this. I'd recommend Whirlwind if you can get it. It is amazing for a character like this as you can attack many creatures but only have one of them next to you at the end of your turn.

Good luck for the throne room! Be careful not to get too surrounded. A character like this is in big trouble if it can't keep moving.

Descended to throne room. Have just shy of 10k experience to spend - I'll probably spend 1.5k on Crowd Fighting, and 3.3k on 7 stealth points + exchange places, which leaves 5k unclaimed - any suggstions?

On 7.1.2014 18:21 meneldil wrote:
I really enjoy playing these characters - all the combats feel very fluid and exciting!

WW is an interesting suggestion - I'd need to get Follow-Through, so the two of them would cost 6.5k together (and mean that Power was definitely not worth getting!). The alternative is just to pick up my Greatsword of Fury, and hope I can survive without weapon switches until I find a staff of sanctity.

On 7.1.2014 18:26 debo wrote:
The thing is that at 950 you generally don't meet packs of monsters, so it's less of an issue. I've had at 700' before and it's amazing.

Whirlwind is super helpful in the throne room, but you can just get that via ,Rage anyways?

On 7.1.2014 18:27 debo wrote:
How are you finding knockback with serpents? I often find it more trouble than it's worth because you have to take multiple swings, which means knocking them back multiple times and potentially eating a bunch of breaths.

On 7.1.2014 18:30 meneldil wrote:
Serpents can be a little nasty, but generally my con is high enough to not have too much difficulty. Also, if I have them on the side of the room I can chain-charge, which is always fun. :D

Indeed I'll be eating ,rage :)

I think I'm going to wield my cursed greatsword in the throne room: the extra damage side + weight (= more damage sides) makes it pretty awesome, and the only drawback is I can't go to sword + shield for resists, but I can always don my cloak of warmth for cold res :)

Escaped. Had fun in the Throne Room - swinging for 3d15 and one-hitting troll guards is pretty awesome :D. Ancalagon fell pretty swiftly, but Gothmog was a lot harder. Morgoth eventually brought the roof down on him, saving me the trouble of finishing him off.

No staves of revelations in hand, so this escape may be tricky.

Why the rush for stealth abilities? Couldn't you avoid at least assassination with follow through?

On 7.1.2014 22:49 meneldil wrote:
Thanks!

I could have taken Follow-Through (and indeed considered it), but taking Assassination works out as 1500 exp cheaper. I figured that follow-through was less useful to me than the extra 1500 exp, and assassination may prove slightly useful on the ascent :)

As for why I took them: well, Exchange Places is Very Handy (if not essential) in the escape, and at that point Opportunist looks pretty tempting, as you have the stealth points for it. Also, I may end up getting an extra dex point from that tree (though actually if I do that then I may have been better off grabbing follow-through) - we'll see how it pans out. :)

In other news: I now have this special hauberk - I assume it's artifact, given the stats, but it hasn't auto-IDed. I don't think I've seen it before, so I'm excited to find out what it does :D

I'll probably finish this run off tomorrow morning :)

Phew. Typically, Morgoth spawned in the room next to me at 950ft. My chosen escape path went via Shelob's lair, and Thu caught up with me as well. Exchange places was really a life-saver.
