Okay, I'll make one last try at this; I'm getting bored of replaying the first level anyway.

Finding the armour of stealth and gauntlets of swordplay have let me suit up, with the stealth and evasion penalties offset.

Looking ahead, I hope to grab an early Momentum and try to put off Lore Master as long as possible.

Still alive, though still to overtake my first entry here... Orcrist is very nice here. I did grab Lore Master in the end. Want to try and get Will up now, aim for the point of Con.

So, died but finally overtook my initial character. Of course, I've run into the problem of never getting so deep before in Sil with any character, so it's proved hard to accurately judge threats even with LoreMaster.

Basically shadow spiders are awful and everything else is ok

In all seriousness, though, in this case I think that taking Inner Light (or even keen senses!) would have been enough to see the spider. They're much less dangerous once you can see them, since you won't have to suffer the awful melee and evasion penalties.

It's generally better to run for an exit as soon as you meet one of them, as losing LOS of them will make them stop chasing you. As soon as you see "Your vision quickly clears." or "You are blind!" after being bitten by a dark thing, running like hell is often a good idea.

Actually even dropping the throwing axe of doriath on the floor probably would have given you enough light to see it, provided you didn't move around much
