7 points evasion, 19 total... lol nice work

Careful that you don't hinge your whole build on that defender weapon. You don't have quite enough damage to deal with sulrauko, kemenrauko, or basically anything with high prot or crit resist.

You are probably going to want inner light and/or keen senses, or song of trees very soon as your light is low for what is coming up next.

Are you using assassination at all, or did you just use it instead of follow-through as your route to opportunist?

On 10.11.2013 19:22 debo wrote:
I might actually be tempted with this guy to go all-in with stealth. If you get cruel blow, your victim will probably stumble around a bit after your initial stab, which will probably trigger at least one of ZoC or opportunist to finish them off.

You also won't have to worry as much that way about losing a ton of evasion when you swap to a different weapon to wack a thick-skinned dude... you could basically just try to sneak around them.

On 10.11.2013 19:32 Thraalbeast wrote:
Thanks! I already got Inner light which combined with a lucky id-by-use !healing saved me against a hoard of worms.

I am using Assasination a lot, Cruel Blow is a good idea. I'll probably try that, but I still don't have much of a plan for this character. I am also thinking, if I find another good sword, I would like to go dual wielding instead of using the shield.

On 10.11.2013 19:52 debo wrote:
Inner light still won't cut it against shadow spiders, I don't think, unless you meet them in a lit room or find a brightness lamp / other +1 light thing.

If you start to get crushed by one and can't see it, your _majesty is probably a good escape, provided you don't whiff the cast.

A good way to weaponize high evasion is riposte. (As long as you have enough light and fire resist from somewhere else than the shield.)

Another good option to increase damage output on a light weapon is subtlety. Especially if you use assassination.

Doing fine but still lacking Rpoison. The shadow cloak was a great find, it put my evasion to a nice level. Damage output is a small problem, all foes I've fought go down, except I tried to kill Delthaur for a long time but need song of sharpness or another boost to get more damage

On 14.11.2013 14:52 taptap wrote:
I really would try subtlety. You already have assassination, cruel blow, finesse and a light sword. You can try song of slaying and later sharpness or rauko bane as well. But you don't have to kill Delthaur now.

On 14.11.2013 15:24 Thraalbeast wrote:
Ok, I'v been huggning a shield all game but will try Subtlety, with decent evasion I should be ok anyway escpecially against non-breathing foes.

On 14.11.2013 16:57 Thraalbeast wrote:
More luck. Finrod and Galadriel adds even more to evasion. rPoison covered and rFire now on the shield. Consumables stacking up, soon time to go see the big guy.
Saving up to song of Sharpness but always had crowd fighting in the throne room, that's a bit expensive now though, do I need it?

On 14.11.2013 19:37 taptap wrote:
Congratulations. Galadriel and Finrod are really cool. Didn't you have a ring of frost earlier?

You should be seriously strong against most enemies (at least when not shield hugging). For abilities flanking or song of sharpness would now be my next choices. Or just put more points into melee, evasion or even stealth. With even better evasion until then most enemies should have trouble hitting you even when surrounding you and they won't survive very long if you rage with a subtle sword of Galadriel (and more melee until then) while singing song of slaying and sharpness.

Just be very careful with elemental breath and Kemenraukos. Nan in particular should be supereasy now (I always enjoyed giants and dragons with fencers.)

I've been trying to gather some more xp and items before the throne room but got caught in several huge fights so I now have far less healing than a moment ago. Been fun though.

The worst scare was when being hunted by a dark/invisible monster (one of the big Horrors or a few dark spiders I guess) and not going back but forward. I had fallen through the roof, so I wanted to find a stairs as backup. But that was a big mistake, I ran right into a Silent Watcher! Without the Crown of Clarity I'd certainly be dead. Very nearly died anyway because the screeching drew M's and v's and Vallach to the fight.

Stabbing Scatha the worm was nice, he was nearly dead from the first attack and reeling with pain. One more move and he was dead.

I had to sing Sharpness to fight some heavily armoured guys and then on leaving via a corridor I ran right into a white D that had woken up. Couldn't back up either because some others were coming that way. Well, rage + song of sharpness + greatsword was enough but that fight cost me another two healing/Miruvor pots.

On 15.11.2013 11:10 taptap wrote:
See, what did I say :) Fencing is fun.

+29 is a lot, but I would increase evasion a bit more. It is still quite cheap and it strengthens both offence (via riposte) and defence. I am a bit puzzled why you ditched dex+1 for str+1. The only abilities I would take at this point are precision (it is free!), woven themes and maybe one or two cheap perception / will abilities for general survivability (keen senses, poison resistance, hardiness?)

Hope you make it. You are strong enough to do so in my opinion.

On 15.11.2013 21:55 Thraalbeast wrote:
Thanks for the tips. I switched back to the =dex (was on the ground) and got precision and Hardiness. If I find a new set of armour I'll drop this one and get Posion Resistance.

Dagorhir and his escorts were easy, all died from the first blow except the boss, but he never knew what hit him, confused and then dead. Smaug the same but he had no escort. Drauglin took some effort but did not do much damage to me in the process. Maeglin on the other hand seemed like a bad fight so I left the floor after a few attempts to damage him.

Also the Gwathrauko are finally ok to fight. I guess it was them I had so much trouble with a while ago. Hard to detect and very hard to hit unless you see them. Also able to cause quite a lot of damage.

Fortunately I found two _Treasures which helped me restock on healing and herbs of rage. Unfortunately I have no time to complete the game today. But the next session is the throne room. Or maybe I'll take a look on the +2,2d6 [+1] mithril longsword of Doriath in the other end of 950' first. Not sure at what weight it would be an alternative to Galadriel, if at all.

On 15.11.2013 22:17 taptap wrote:
Look at your evasion skill and trust your shortsword. With rage, slaying, sharpness and subtlety you are strong enough for everyone.

On my way up. I made the mistake of wandering round a bit before the fight so I got the first fight too far away from V. Later when fighting V, Slaying and foes ended before he was down so I just took one Silmaril and started upwards.

Ascent is easy, but careless play left me drained to STR 0 and now I'm not sure I can use the Mattock. And V's right next to me fighting vampires from the other direction. Interesting...

You can restart slaying when you get your voice back (Miruvor does that as well) without completely losing your acquired bonus. Maybe you could have had another stab at Morgoth during the ascent with rapid attack and concentration (?) only singing sharpness. (I always try at least once more during the ascent, when I didn't manage in the throne room.)

You still have your 1d3 armour and no gloves at all, I guess there will be nudist challenges soon :)

On 16.11.2013 20:36 Thraalbeast wrote:
Oh, I thought !grace would restore voice, not !Miruvor. Was quite disappointed when it didn't. Didn't even check if Miruvor would help. Good to know.

Yeah, the armour is quite bad. Been looking for a replacement but not seen one in quite a while. But I don't get hit much. I sort of regret passing on stealing a Galvourn armour next to a white D quite a while ago - [0,1d8] would have been nice, but at that point I did not have Will/rPoision, just rPoison on my armour, plus I was quite scared of the big D's. I still walk around with the shield on my arm to cover surprise fire breath attacks, although I do remember to unwield it in most fights.

On 16.11.2013 20:48 taptap wrote:
Grace only increases your max voice but not the actual points, just like constitution.

I don't remember the will of big Ds, you probably should look this up first, but once you covered the risk I found big white Ds very rewarding opponents for strong fencers. Lots of experience and loot although I lost two or three promising characters until I remembered to always get free action and sufficient will first.

Thanks for pushing me to not use the shield when fighting! Subtlety is a much bigger advantage than a shield, although when surrounded by breathers I did use it once or twice even in the later game.

it definitely requires a leap of faith, it is hard at first to believe that a 1d7 or 1d8 weapon can do sufficient damage and "you need a larger weapon" is so common as advice.

Thanks! Yes, only after using the shortsword in the throne room, I would really believe it. I actually hacked at V with the Greatsword for a while to compare - but that was clearly inferior.

It also took some effort to get comfortable with minimal armour and shield-less fighting. But I liked it, I'd like to do a simliar run dressed as a Noble(wo)man - a stylish Robe, Gloves, Crown and Boots should be enough.
