First win. Got lots of questions answered on IRC since I started playing. This was my third character to get to the throne room, and my umpteenth "sure winner". Some of the more notable splats along the way include attacking a Silent Watcher at 950' for easy exp without knowing that stunning can knock you out. Another strong character forgot that not even shields protect you against dark breath and died meleeing a lone ancient amethyst serpent without bothering to sing Trees.

The build is my trademark Heavy Armour Subtlety Concentration Finarfin. :) I played these exclusively for a long time regardless of what items I found (Saithnar? Nah, I think I'll just use this 2.3 lb long sword). Recently I've given in to the urge to play optimally and tried to play the cards I'm dealt as well as I can. This was the first character in a while with whom I decided to go for Subtlety for fun pretty early. I was immediately rewarded with Amrod's short sword, and it wasn't long until Duruin dropped Nargil.

I started considering Heavy Armour Use when I found a 2d6 corslet of protection, and it wasn't long until I found Nevrast, so that decision turned out pretty well too. I would generally use Angrod's shield against serpents and drakes and kept the off-hand empty otherwise. Needless to say I got a lot of criticals even with the shield on.

What an unusual character for a first win. Congratulations! Good to see the Knife of Nargil getting some use.

Yep. Impressed and congratulations. (This is the 1d5 dagger, not 1d7 as in marvinpa's version!)

Thanks! Even with 1d5 base damage, Nargil with Rapid Attack turned out to be pretty strong against anything that isn't immune to critical hits. Even monsters with critical resistance dropped fairly quickly. In the end I only ever switched to a two-handed weapon against grotesques.

I recently tried a 3353 Fingolfin and got to the throne room on my second try, and I can see that something like that would be more straightforward for a first win, but this kind of build was quite fun (even without Nargil) and plenty strong once I finally ran out of new stupid mistakes to make.

(My first character ever to get to the throne room would at least have made it to the ascent if I had realized that I was only a few potions away from being gorged. :) I ended up getting slapped around by Morgoth and a couple of nasty uniques with no way of healing or buffing. I lost another strong character in the same way somewhere around 900'. Perhaps it would be a good idea to show a bit more information about the player's satiation level?)

Very nice!

What did you use against crit-resistant enemies (e.g. deathblades, oathwraiths, kemen)? Did you stick with Nargil or did you have something else onhand? (I see you have Calris now, but you didn't find that until 950'.)

Oh, you had Glend before Calris I see

I had Glend until I found Calris, but I only used it against grotesques and a couple of deathblades (forgot to mention those above). Well, I may have used it on a couple of Oathwraiths very early, but later on I had no trouble mowing down Unmourned with Nargil. Nargil worked surprisingly well on Kemenrauko too at that point. I carried around a 2d6 longsword of Nargothrond for a while, but then fsil indicated that Nargil actually did quite a bit more damage even against Kemenrauko, so I ditched the longsword and never looked back.

On 4.11.2013 14:18 half wrote:
This is interesting. Not many people use Nargil, but maybe that is due to a bias about Nargil rather than it not being good enough. Perhaps its attack bonus should be lowered? If fsil produces some results like this for you that seem to go against the forum wisdom, then do share them here.

On 4.11.2013 16:47 kryft wrote:
I could be wrong, but I wouldn't think that Nargil is too strong as it is. If there were a sharp shortsword, for instance, I expect that would probably be better for most if not all characters that would consider Nargil. If you're somehow making sharpness less necessary in the near future, that will probably weaken Nargil quite a bit on its own.

Also note that I don't think this character found a single one-handed artefact weapon after Nargil, so it's not like I did extensive comparisons. :) I did find a few 2d6 longswords and one 2d7 Hador longsword, but they were heavy enough that I didn't even bother comparing them with Nargil; after all, going from a dagger to a 3 lb longsword would cost me nearly half my expected critical dice, while also losing sharpness. No news here: sharpness is really good, and often seems necessary unless your character is built around a big two-hander.
