I was sick and skipped work yesterday so I decided to try Sil out. This was my best character yet. Everything went rather smoothly until I went into a tunnel. There were some wargs at the other end, I turned back and found out orcs had arrived on the other side...

I went with a build concentrating mostly on melee and evasion, though I had to get curse breaker after equipping some 'special' gloves with -STR.

A problem might have been getting too fancy with abilitis and not concentrating on just adding to skill points.

Were they gloves of treachery? Those are actually quite good in the early game and worth keeping on until you can (hopefully) find _sanc to uncurse them. Opportunist is a really good ability.

I'd say you probably went crazy on the abilities too.

Note that if you find yourself getting into trouble with flanking, often the best solution is to run _into_ it rather than away from it, since you can still hit while getting your +3 to evasion. :)

Also forgot to say -- very well done!

What debo said and ... I wouldn't combine finesse with charge, but power and charge (and use a weapon that lets me use the charge bonus to strength to full extent). I also would try lighter armour when I use flanking. Also, no cloak at all until 400 ft.?

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, they were gloves of treachery, I just missed the Opportunist being on them as this was the first time I saw them. I've probably played too much Angband.

I've yet to wade through some of the combat mechanics and finer nuances of the game. Though Charge with a proper weapon did do a hefty amount of damage. In that sense the Greatsword would have done more damage to Wargs than the bastard sword and I should have had some kind of a lighter weapon for situations when I can't use charge.

But I have to admit that this is probably the best Roguelike I've played. It's rather fast to play, there isn't much point in running trough the same depths too often and the skill system and enemy AI are very nice.

Some tries later... This one went better. I just managed to mess up the build a bit by going wild with abilities early. Aaand then I got caught in a web, managed to kill the distended spider, but some wargs and trolls got sight of me before that.

But it was a fun run and I learned a lot again.

And now I also learned that the ladder overwrites an older character with the same dump txt filename.
