"Military archer" (no stealth, no listen) with versatility and many moral effects instead (look at the light radius and add majesty). Early game was difficult with archery fights throughout whole floors. Would have been dead without Elbereth and Sprinting. Cleared 950ft. and forged 2 artefacts in the Chambers of Thu, now ready for the throne room only lack rapid fire.

I wonder what to sing. Slaying + Elbereth first, Slaying + Sharpness later?

Couple things:

When you sing sharpness, your arrows become piercing and will pass through dudes. If you're trying to kill V, and one of your arrows passes through him and hits another target, you will lose your concentration bonus and will have to start building it up over again.

If you just sing slaying you might not even need sharpness -- 36 base archery + precision is kinda ridiculous.

I'm not sure how you'll manage the crowds with only 11 evasion but you have 10 !Quickness and it's actually not that hard to pull dudes into the halls on the left where you have a better fighting chance. Just be careful because high-level uniques often spawn in that room where the easterling spies are, IIRC.

glgl :)

I am not going into the corridor. Crippling shot slows, but doesn't reliably stops anymore and as soon as I run out of space I am dead against almost everything. It also limits my aura of fear.

If there aren't any special effects in the throne room I am confident I can send most enemies fleeing without even laying hand on them.
Buffed up I will have 5 points from majesty and some more points against light sensitive people (7 if I count correctly, more if I stand close to the floor lamp I have, shame I didn't manage to get song of the trees for maximal terror) and as soon as some start running this will lead to a chain rout. I am not exactly sure what counts as "similar" creatures for morale effects, not sure about the depth modifier - seriously orcs have the highest bonus for being out of depth but raukar just flee and I need magical source of fear (Elbereth) to get rid of trolls who otherwise keep fighting even with negative confidence and additionally I am not sure who exactly is light sensitive (I don't have a Lore-Master item despite playing a smith.)

The one time I killed Morgoth with an archer I sang sharpness but had him isolated in a position with nobody else behind him. But that was an archer with much less archery, no slaying bonus but close to 30 stealth. The problem here will be to get some work out of slaying against weaker enemies while still being in a good position against Morgoth.

If I take bane I can get even more intimidating: additional 6 against raukar or orcs, 5 against wolves or trolls, 4 against serpents or dragons. I should decide who is most dangerous to me.

Does Morgoth wait on his position until I break tension? (I wonder whether I can put everyone to flight before engaging him. Gorthaur is running but "only" on -7 so he might come back, the orcs, trolls, wolves will run several floors before stopping.)

Using song of slaying is out of question now - not enough easy enemies available. Sharpness alone + concentration ramp up should work as long as his minions don't come and bother me. Gorthaur coming back and the unrelenting horrors are my main fear at the moment.

Impressive stuff!

I wonder whether Elbereth should break the tension; I guess probably it should, but I can see a case both ways.

Note that (as I recall) the temporary fear modifiers have an exponential decay, so if the stuff you scared massively hasn't actually left the level it will return after a non-ridiculous period (if Majesty alone isn't enough to keep it going).

Well, the orcs and trolls are -40 to -100. (I have 8 light, inner light and dropped a feanorian lamp + majesty + elbereth at the moment. The orcs may even rout without Elbereth and the trolls forced down from aggressiveness to mere confidence.) The werewolves are around -20 to -30, but they are quite far away. Gorthaur undoubtedly got tipped over by his wolf friends panicking and not my distant Elbereth against his high will.

If it broke tension it would be much more hectic with little time for buffing up and instant shooting. I believe tension is a good mechanism to allow non-stealth types to position for battle. More ways to play is always good in my opinion.

Am I right that similar refers to the groups sharing a letter?

I wonder about my next move. If I see another valuable unique I might be able to take bane for more terror before breaking tension.

Currently only enemies in sight with positive confidence are the two unrelenting horrors with 5 and Morgoth (I don't understand this number. They should have 6 - 5 (majesty) + number of similars in sight and may be a little influence from Elbereth soon).

I should have brought staff of majesty, but I thought I was terrifying enough, it is my first intimidation attempt. (They check against staff difficulty not against opponents will do they?)

I waited a turn and see a red D with 3 confidence in 5 tiles distance. If it comes closer it will rout. A single good shot would sent it packing as well. Gorthaur moved out sight from some of his buddies and already gained two morale.

If I have to kill Gorthaur before Morgoth I am in trouble because I never will regain the beautiful distance I have now. I would then wield Gaurin and leave with a Silmaril.

Gorthaur down. Only unrelenting horrors and Morgoth prepared to fight. Red D fled (may come back with Elbereth now only minor theme).

Red D fled to...? the stairs? O_o

Red D fled out of sight. I doubt it will make it to the stairs. Gothmog showed up. I need a break to think about this.

Morale: monsters get a bonus of 1 for each floor that they're encountered above their natural depth, and a malus of 1 for each floor below their natural depth.

That makes sense (I wonder whether it is intentional, but this makes monsters the strongest the first time you encounter them), but the manual has it wrong then, it writes "+1 for appearing after their usual depth" and "-1 for appearing before their usual depth". And of course in game you only see 1000 ft. not the 24 Gothmog presumably has.

Forgot to link the best screenshot: http://angband.oook.cz/screen-show.php?id=2379 - intimidation works. Notice how empty the throne room is.

Switching themes in a song breaks concentration. Never got more than 4 bonus from concentration that way.

Shot 22 arrows (double branded) singing sharpness + elbereth and one turn of elbereth + sharpness.

Damage per (player) turn was between 38 and 78.

Going completely Elbereth + Sharpness as minor theme might have been even better. No switching, no concentration loss, no turn waste. It could have been hairy if more high will uniques of different types had shown up or if there had been more unrelenting horrors (killed 3) close by, potentially a fatal distraction while Morgoth closes in.

Positioning and potentially repositioning much easier with a hunter (stealth-perception-archer).

Very happy to see intimidation approach work.

As a note, 28 melee is about as much as many melee specialists will have when they enter the throne room -- even ones that have a decent shot at killing V.

Nice work here -- I agree that maybe having elbereth on all the time may have worked better. Weird that you lose your concentration bonus when you swap songs, though.

It takes a turn and counts as an action I guess.

I never spammed accuracy rings before, but when you use only one bodily skill dexterity doesn't make much sense and I wouldn't change accuracy +3 for damage +1 as well. If you think about it removing the attack penalty on the shield and the attack bonus on the cloak have about as much effect as a dexterity +1 for this gal.

I pretty much only used melee to get to the first forge, clear up worm-masses and take cheap shots with flanking w/ Catskin and Gaurin while repositioning - but for actual attacks I rather shot point blank in the rare cases that a quick enemy made it that far before being intimidated. (I took Majesty at 500ft.)

Looked at your screenshot -- I'm a bit surprised at the unrelenting horrors. I guess maybe you killed too many uniques before the throne room and they were acting as subs? I thought you wouldn't get those down there unless they were replacing one of the big 4.

Went through the gates buffed singing Elbereth and Freedom. Carcharoth was standing next to me when I opened the door. Staff of Majesty made him flee - rebuffed and killed him.
