Start by casting 'Summon Yeeks' and let them do the killing for you. You won't ever be able to do direct damage except for devices. So while your pets do your bidding, find someplace to hide and wait things out. Learn to use the various pet commands ('p') such as choosing a target and what not.

The Capture Ball works with occasional failure on a pet. To have it work on a normal monster, you need to wound that monster down to 1 star of health.
