An unimpressive start. I thought the sling I found would be helpful but the damage it causes is underwhelming. With an extra shot and 8 damage I though it would do at least 32 points damage and be a lot better than my firebolts which only do 5d3 damage but that doesn't seem to be the case. What don't I understand?

That +8 in FA (and any O-combat variants) is not straight plus to damage. It's a percentage (8x5%, so 40%) added to the base dice damage. So damage dice are much more important.
