Inspired by Scatha's song-based character a few days ago... I decided to go with a more moderate approach and to work up to Mastery. Just got it now, and it's helping a LOT. I took a huge risk fighting Nan, and it paid off when he dropped Maglor :)

Fun game, even if I am burning turns like crazy. Usually I hit 650' at min depth of 350-400 or so :)

I want to play this game using the other songs, so I think I'm going to forbid myself from taking song of slaying or sharpness. I'd like to try Este or Staying, especially since I'm taking a protection bent with this guy.

I suppose I should put some points in will at some point, also. :/

Nice going (and yes, Maglor is great). Definitely looks like it could be an easier route in than the one I took (I've tried my build a couple more times, and it's pretty fragile in the early game). I did take Aule -> Sharpness, which was powerful, but I needed more tricks to make up for my weak basic stats. Weaving Mastery with Elbereth can also be strong.

Now you have Mastery I'd be tempted to leave the shield aside and perhaps use Glend as a default weapon, to end fights faster. You can probably avoid putting any more points in Evasion for a good long while.

Maybe you could aim to pick up the point of Grace from the Perception tree? Extra voice is always useful when singing is your major control mechanism.

On 12.7.2013 13:52 debo wrote:
Yeah I'm trying to figure out how strong mastery is actually going to be past 650', because I've never really looked at the will scores of monsters before. I know cats are low-will, but what about serpents? Greater werewolves? Troll guards?

Also, I'm so noisy right now that there is a very real chance of a drake or a balrog waking up and squishing me like a bug, and I have no idea how much song I'd need to make it sit still :)

On 12.7.2013 13:52 debo wrote:
Song of mastery is just a straight song vs. will check, right? I do d10 + song, monster does d10 + will, and if I win, they lose a turn? Or does it decay with distance?

On 12.7.2013 14:03 Scatha wrote:
It decays with distance, and they get a +5 bonus as well. This is needed for balance; note that already you're already going to be getting a bonus on average as good as being fast against adjacent enemies with Will 16 or so, which covers almost everything outside the very depths. And it gets a lot better as their Will decreases, so you can really get a statue effect against some enemies (on the other hand, it's less predictable than speed, which can be annoying).

Cats and trolls are distinctly low Will, and shouldn't cause you problems. Serpents and Werewolves are medium Will (werewolves a bit higher, I think), but should still be pretty easy for you.

Raukar and Dragons (and a few deep uniques) are where you'll find higher Will scores. You have Loremaster, so I'd advise using the monster recall to keep an eye on things as they appear.

On 12.7.2013 14:06 debo wrote:
Thanks Scatha, that's exactly the sort of math I wasn't confident on doing on my own!

I can use Lore Master to inspect things as they happen, for sure, but that doesn't really help me plan my build right now :D I might go back to a different character with a more complete monster memory and see if I can get a feel for which bad guys are more hardheaded than others and by how much. I seem to remember a fair number of uniques and higher-tier monsters who were 20+ will.

On 12.7.2013 14:22 Scatha wrote:
From memory I think the only monsters at 20+ Will are:

Glaurung (21)
Gorthaur (21)
Gothmog (20? might be 19)
Morgoth (20, rising to 25 when he loses the crown)

Great fire drakes are 18 or 19, the highest of non-uniques.

Anyhow, doesn't Lore Master let you use the knowledge menu to browse through all monsters and see their stats in the monster memory window?

Oh and Grace from the perception tree is a super good idea, I forgot I was Finarfin!

On 12.7.2013 14:25 debo wrote:
OMG I didn't know Lore Master literally just spoiled the entire monster memory for you! That is awesome!!! hahahah

I understand now how it was implemented too :)

As is always the case when I try a build for the first time, things are getting a little bit hairy. Pretty manageable still, though.

I decided to go for subtlety to increase damage output since I'd found such a great longsword, but I kept Glend around for Kemenrauko.

The biggest problem is this sequence:

a) Enter new floor
b) I am noisy so things wake up
c) I sing mastery to kill them
d) Even more things wake up and come to kill me
e) goto c) until dying or out of voice

But I'm starting to figure it out now. One thing that does work sort of well is to position myself to one side of a room, sing Elbereth to scare all the monsters in one direction, and then run like hell in the other. Usually I can "vanish" this way, even being as noisy as I am. I might take sprinting for this reason.

Cats are basically cannon fodder at this point, and even rauko miss a fair number of turns. I scared Duruin away quite a few times with elbereth, although I think I could have taken him.

One particularly nasty trend:

I walk into a room and I see a shadow spider (or at least its dark cloud) about 1-2 squares away. I sing Trees, but in the same turn that I start the song, it dances up to me and bites while I'm still suffering the darkness penalty. I've had several:

> You begin a song of something something trees of valinor.
(spider moves once to get next to me b/c it's fast as shit)
> It bites you!!!
> You are blind!

and _then_ the light actually takes effect. Very nasty :)

Would be nice if the light was applied in the same turn I started singing, but I understand why it was done this way.

Well, this has gone way better than I expected. I hit my strength curve earlier than normal -- from 800' onward has been pretty easy.

Trying to figure out where to invest next -- starting to get to diminishing returns on melee. There aren't really any other melee abilities I want. I guess I could take dodging+sprinting. I've thought about going up the will tree too for Con, but I don't really see the benefit.

Regen amulet is super useful, probably more useful than my blessed realm one -- getting voice back quickly is awesome, and regen seems to help that.

I'm just entering the Land of the Way Too Many Gwathrauko, and I can't mix songs, so I may get into trouble trying to constantly swap Trees and Mastery. Let's see what happens. I can always take woven themes, I guess :)

Cleared gothmog's hall. I was worried about Gothmog and whoever else he had in there, but I elberethed everyone out and I think he fled down the stairs. Turkano showed up later, but his host didn't stand a chance, and he went down without getting a single turn.

I've decided I don't want to bother trying to kill V this time, so I took exchange places to deal with him if tries to trap me on the way up. Still no _rev thus far.

FYI a LOL after a unique kill signifies that it died without getting a turn.

I don't really have a plan for the throne room, but I think I might just go for it.

Well, that was nerve-wracking. I didn't have the confidence to turn on mastery and wade right into the throne room, so I decided to use Morgoth's secret hallway (the one that opens up behind his throne).

I woke everything up in the entryway, though, and then decided to fight my way through a few of them to get into the side passage. I had to sing mastery, which woke up an unrelenting horror. I could freeze it, but I couldn't kill it so I was forced to make some quick decisions.

I took vanish in the hopes of losing all the other bad guys, snuck behind the throne with the horror right on my tail, buffed up... only to discover that Morgoth had already made his way up to the north end of the throne room b/c of all the earlier commotion.

So, I ended up walking right into the middle of the throne room anyways, singing mastery. Luckily, most of the bad guys were pretty dispersed. I was able to get to V quickly, and I locked down V and Gorthaur with mastery. I used Glend + Str to get the Silmaril out, at which point I couldn't quite keep V under control anymore.

I fled through the rest of the group, strategically killing orc champions who were plugging up my route, and was able to escape relatively unscathed.

While that was super fun, I now have no _rev, am quite noisy, and V is alive and very angry. I am not looking forward to this ascent at _all_. :)

Sounds exciting! I like the stressful ascents best... well, er, after the fact.

Lost interest on the way up, got bored, got killed. I really dislike the ascent when V is alive now, it feels like a Looney Tunes cartoon or something.

I totally forgot I had exchange places, got caught between V and a serpent, and he pancaked me.

Fun game, the mastery build is great and I would do it again. Using song to move things around is awesome fun!

Aww man. I'm kind of the opposite. I wish Morgoth never died and all the ascents were nail biters.

You always have the coolest notes.

If the ascent was half as long, I probably could truck it out. But being at 750' and knowing there are still like 15 floors to go... I just couldn't hack it this time lol

I probably should have taken a break for a few days and then given it a shot. Oh wells.

The other thing was that on every single floor except 750, V spawned in the adjacent room and was on me right away. I wonder if Lorien would have been a better choice than Silence.

I also never tried Elbereth -- doubt it would work against him, but I never gave it a shot.

Elbereth doesn't work against Morgoth, as per half.
