15,086 600 ft Defence would be [+8,2-7] (which is pathetic), and
                      Song of Mastery
15,086 600 ft Song is 16 -- that means he'd miss about half of his

15,086 600 ft But he can easily critical me for 4d12 ... that will

15,086 600 ft Nope, even with a couple of thousand experience to
                      spend, seems tough
  15,086 600 ft Current investment: Melee 6, Evasion 5, Smithing 8,
                      Song 10
15,102 600 ft Hmm ... I could learn Elbereth and use Gauntlets of
                      Treachery
15,102 600 ft But risks running into unknown territory and getting
                      in trouble
15,115 600 ft Tried engaging a little, think I could have won but it
                      was too risky

15,277 600 ft Listen is out of reach
15,294 600 ft Encountered Nan, the Giant

  15,575 600 ft Slain by a Ringrauko.
  15,575 600 ft Died on 10 July 2013.

I had fun with this one. Shouldn't have died here, but I'd got a little behind the clock and had just run from a couple of fights, so was not cautious enough. I think the build has a lot of potential; most of the time I felt pretty strong. Song of Mastery is certainly enjoyable to play with in the early game, and by the time I needed to fight Easterling uniques I was able to weave in Sharpness.

I'd be interested to see where better players than I could take the build.

One way I could have been stronger is if I'd made a different artefact. Instead of 'Prophecy', I nearly decided on a Robe with +4 to Song. In the end I decided to wait a little later, when I'd be able to put (+1) on it as well, but I'm sure the song bonus would have improved my survivability a lot.

Neat build. I wonder if you could hold off on rushing to artifice, and just focus on making better stuff (like those acc rings you were making). You could just buy song of mastery, and I imagine you're good enough at the ID game to not need loremaster.

Also: I find the easiest way to tell if a shadow spider or a shadow bat is attacking is to look at the combat rolls. xd5 is bat, xd9 is spider. There are other ways, obviously, but that is the most reliable IMO :)

Were you using the glaive b/c of rauko slaying -- i.e. was it mostly a swap, or was it your primary weapon?

Holding off on Artifice is certainly possible. I was only just reaching the 21 smithing needed for the (+3) ring, so if you wanted to curtail the smithing investment generally you'd need to pull back a bit. But perhaps Artistry would be a good move to let you make useful stuff.

I do need Enchantment to make a Crown of Command, though. Song of Mastery has a requirement of 13, so you can't get it early.

Re. the bat/spider: yeah, it turned out the reason I was getting confused was that there was one of each.

Re. the glaive: just a swap. I was actually swapping enough here that I didn't feel like I had a primary weapon (used the Greatspear of Gondolin more than anything else), but against foes where I didn't use a slay it would be the longsword-and-shield or bastard-sword-without-shield.

Overall this was fun. The lack of raw combat power was made up for by the pseudo-speed effect of Mastery, which gave me an edge in straight fights as well as letting me catch fleeing enemies or make my escape if need be (had one great time using it to freeze a room full of worm masses while I fled through them).
