A modified (easier) version of the "no magic" challenge. Here, I used the "no-magic-items" source mods (http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=5911) and only disallowed taking Jewelry and Enchantment in the Smithing tree, and all Songs. In particular, I allow both Inner Light and Flaming Arrows, which Scatha specifically banned in the original statement of the challenge.

This version is noticeably easier. I knew that Flaming Arrows would be game changing, but I was surprised at just how much difference Inner Light made. That one extra light level was huge.

I think this is the first ever game where I took the point of Dexterity from the Evasion tree. Being nearly unhitable was a lot of fun, and made a big difference against the troll guards. I still had to run away from them now and again, but was able to take down more of them and more reliably.

I took Rapid Fire and Crippling Shot on the way back up, just to see if maybe I could actually kill Morgoth. No chance. Despite wasting maybe 30 arrows (+3, flaming), I never even knocked a single star off.

Killing V is all about how much damage you can do per turn. No reason you couldn't kill him in a no-magic challenge, but I suspect your archery just isn't high enough to get enough criticals here.

I'm also interested by you finding that lovely Galvorn armour on the way up at 450'. I wonder if object generation depths do no apply on the ascent?

The Galvorn armour was dropped by Maeglin, so I don't think you can draw any conclusions about object generation depth. I suppose it is possible that if I had another dozen points in Archery (to get two extra criticals per shot) that might be enough to wear down V, but I'm not so sure about killing him. You'd have to do it in a single continuous burst of shots, since if V closes the gap, he'll heal up in the time it takes you to run away to a new firing position. Maybe if you could hit hard enough to get Crippling Shots, but I don't know how hard that is against V in 1.1.1. Still, it seems like the next challenge! The amusing part of this is that even if you could kill V, it would *still* be virtually impossible to dig out more than one Silmaril.
