Plasma isn't really better than Nether, it was my only resource for nether res and I already have enough base res. So not so happy with that downgrade. (I never use the breathing as it costs way too much hp for 132 damage.) Any other clvl 39 form would have been better than Plasma (in my opinion), my luck.

Notice me not having SI, so the It's were my biggest concern, started with those with all the buffs I had with me, only 1 could steal and get from it's starting position. Lucky me (I thought), so I rushed to the Ant Queens, noticing a Enchanteress (easy). But no other monster with her... Damn, something invisible. So in LoS the first thing I notice are 5 Dreads surrounding me. It's an undead Q... Great... Still no SI... 'It teleports away'. I'm screwed.

So, after a short fight everything south is dead except one Gachapin who teleported (and a Q).

So I'm starting with the upper half, things went very smooth until R comes in sight breathing tox, swapping my Chr with Con and my Con with Dex (or something like that). Result thanks to some drained stats:

Con 18/150
Chr 18/128

...

So, back to 2 and 1 blow instead of 2 and 3. Half my fighting power. luckily +27 speed helps a lot and I was still able to kill the Grendels and Rogroks. 'It blinks away' Crap... no wait... a Q appears next to me... KILL!! (RNG felt sorry).

Ow, and I'm going to scream if my clvl 47 isn't the Aether Hound, especially Mana is way underpowered compared to the other 2. Mana = Nether in power as it doesn't? have any resses and the breath is based on HP and not on type.

Just spend 1.8m on scroll gambling, giving me 2x ?o*Acq* en 4x ?oAcq. So I was really hoping for some lifechanging gear... Nope, the result (minus a slay *orc* weapon) is in my backpack. So instead of lifechanging gear I got can't-even-improve-one-slot items. :) But now I really hate I don't play human form, Vorpal and Shiva give you an nice damage output. You could even go melee as high-mage with those two. Supported with a decent shield and some strength boosting gloves. Found a nice kit, just not for a Hound. :)

Keep at it though. Gaining xp from 40 to 50 is very important, though you will never be as powerful as a good dragon race would. Your melee is OK, and should serve, and your breaths will grow much more powerful as well (up to 300 dam for 30hp). You have nice talents with Stalk and Run and your Leaping Attack is very important as well.

For the last evolution, I'd prefer Tindalos myself. If you get Mana Hound, you get extra speed combined with an unresistable breath. The power of Aether is their resistance since you won't be able to control which breath you use. All three are pretty nice, but it might be frustrating to not get the one you want.

Once you can, sell out to kill Carcharoth. You need a better dog collar :D

For the initial design, hounds are OK with melee, though not strong. And their breaths are somewhat useful, but not enough to go full caster. Their device skills are poor (They are doggies, after all). But at least they *can* read scrolls, unlike jellies (Scooby Doo?). They have a good equipment set and can even use body armor, unlike dragons. With 4 rings and their high innate speed, they can get by with 1 or perhaps even 0 rings of speed for the end game so long as they find some good speed boots. Even with 3 rings of damage +15 (and no rings of power) and the boss reward, my test hound could melee for over 600 in the end, and the Leaping Attack is extremely useful for the Serpent. The Hell Harness might make a good swap item until you can beat Carcharoth. But you'll need some really good armor and perhaps a lucky set of dragon wings to cover up resistances.

By gaming potions of New Life my test hound was able to get a breather for 370 (for 30sp) which is quite a bit higher than I thought possible. As a Mana Hound, I might try to breathe with that, especially with the Run technique for quick retreat out of line of sight if needed. But paying hp for breaths means your damage quickly disintegrates, so I think melee is the best way to go after all.

To address poor devices, you could use amulets of magic mastery or perhaps a different starting personality. But devices will never be strong. And I admit, a 5+% fail scroll of teleport in the end game is risky ... Perhaps I could give them a tad more device skills?

They both have an unusual head and this will help with their biggest problem: slots for resistances. I had a hard time covering them, using ringslots for resistance is not by my liking. Not being able to use MD sounds somewhat right, hounds are stupid animals compared to stuff like beholders, dragons, angels, demons, liches. Some races just should be stupid. I had a MD +3 set amulet, dropping the failrate by 5%? Not that useful if you have a failrate of 80%. :p

So if you have a Helmet, you wouldn't need to have this many resistance rings, which will give you to opportunity to boost damage, which would make them powerful enough. He wasn't that weak and he could trigger superstealth for solofighting.

Equipment could look like this

Should be doable. If you implent the helmetthing, I will offer another run with a hound to check it out.

About breathes, I wasn't using it because I hate stuff that eats away your life if you don't have much to begin with. Monster Hounds also don't loose hp while breathing. I would implent some sort of monstermana for the monsterrace. Stupid races (jelly/hound/giant/ect.) don't get a lot of mana (<100mana maybe at clvl 50) and the smarter ones (beholder/lich) get a manapool worthy of their race. This way a hound or any monster can't become to breathing/casting canon (unless it is one), but the ability will be more useful than it's now.

For the upper hound tier, I'll let Mana Hounds get +10 (was +15), let Tindalos get +7 (was +10) and knock Aether hounds down to +5 (was +10). For the second to last tier, Plasma and Chaos will get +5, Time will get +7 and Gravity will keep +0. Even so, they should only need a single good RoS for the end game.

I seem to recall some variant having artifact dog collars for Farmer's dogs but can't remember which? Perhaps I'll make up some early dog collars as well ...

About the Collar, yeah, one variant had all kind of monster linked artifacts. I liked that as it would make killing uniques even more interesting. (Like Brand/Dorwin now). Can't recall which one either. Checked Eyband, Posband and Reposband. Maybe the forum can help.

Similarly, giving equal speed to each hound in a tier isn't always fair. You got lucky with the Nether hound as it is the only choice in that tier with a speed boost (+10 is definitely too generous at that point). It gets the boost since Nether is such a useless breath and is almost universally resisted. Compare the Nether Hound to the Inertia Hound which can slow almost everything it faces! :)

I'm willing to consider adjustments, of course.
