After not having time to play for a long while, here is my third attempt at a polearm master. All three used weaponsmith, armoursmith, artistry starts. My first tried 1.5 lb spear, kite-shield, zoc, blocking, controlled retreat. That was pretty good (especially controlled retreat) but the damage output was just too low. The next two went for more strength, glaive, power, knock back, parry, riposte. This one made it much further and I can say that it is very powerful. Knock Back made a big difference!

I'm sitting on a 3 use forge at 650 ft, with 8,610 experience in the bank. Artifice seems likely. Any ideas of what to make, or where to go from here? I could make a Glaive with Controlled Retreat? I wouldn't mind some boots or sprinting, but I don't really want to get Enchantment at this stage.

I got them because Riposte is very good for a high evasion character with a big damage weapon. In particular, it goes well with passing the turn, as it means I can often get the (+4) from focusing on an attack triggered by Riposte or Polearm Mastery.

It does mean that adding [+1] to a Glaive artefact would be better than usual.

Nice character. I tended to take the mixed stealth route with my polearm masters. Controlled Retreat is great, so I like the idea of putting it on an artefact. Do think about the weight you want; I think even with Power you'll find you get use out of criticals.

taptap: I think the idea of Riposte is that it gives you extra opportunities to knock back enemies and generate extra attacks. Generally this character will be very strong against single enemies, and run into more problems with mobs. I suppose that's some reason not to pick up Controlled Retreat.

If that Golden Staff has any more charges (more than 3), it could be Freedom, Imprisonment, Summoning, or even Entrapment. In my experience, Staves of Sanctity have 2-3 charges at most.

The groups/individuals thing is true. It is a good reason to pick up ZOC and Crowd Fighting abilities in case things get grim.

I decided to go with a Controlled Retreat artefact Glaive, and shortly after made some Whirlwind artefact gloves. She's doing very well now, quite comfortable at 850 ft and probably ready for 900 ft. Polearm mastery really is her forte. It is particularly nice with Controlled Retreat to be able to get at least the first two attacks on any enemy, with a large Focused Attack bonus on the first one. Even Strength 2 is enough to get a lot of Knock Backs, especially on low-health creatures like cats and serpents.

I'll add that the Str 2 Knock Backs is really Str 2 with a two handed weapon, which gives a +2 bonus in the Knock Back check, making it like Str 4 with a one handed weapon.

Still alive, in the bowels of Angband. I was doing well at 850 ft, but am doing substantially less well now. This is partly because I gave up my (+2) ring of accuracy before I saw how nasty vampire lords are and how much I need it for them, and partly because I'm lugging around Anglachel as my only sharpness weapon for the crown. This means a *lot* of vampire lords. I'm also slowly running out of food. Maybe all this means I need to make a break for it? Will Delmereth be enough for the Silmaril, or do you think I need to keep Anglachel?

At the time of this dump, I've just finished killing my second Balrog: Turkano. The first one, Duruin, was noticeably more difficult than anything else I'd encountered and Turkano was almost indestructible. I coped well with his escort, at one point having 3 Ururaukar adjacent to me as well as Turkano, and whirlwinding the three to death. I'd been using almost no consumables and Turkano cost me about 5 quickness potions, 4 healing, and 2 miruvor. Obviously I wouldn't have started it if I'd known it would cost so much. He even did 37 points of net damage to me in one attack at one point! I haven't played much since the Balrogs appeared in Sil, and they seem to be a good difficulty: i.e. enough to inspire terror.

Holy crap that's a lot of pots.

Interesting to see how low your smithing investment has been, and how you've been making artefacts mostly as an alternate method of accruing abilities (e.g. instead of holding out and trying to make some uber-artefacts).

At first, it didn't really seem to me like it was worth it, but now with those boots I'm not sure -- certainly saves on the XP to not have to buy a bunch of prereqs.

Definitely quite different than how I play a smith -- usually I just put minimal points (6 or 7 max) for the early game and then ignore it; or I go big and focus all my efforts on it in the hopes of getting a big win at the end. This seems like a more temperate way of doing it (pun intended).

On 4.3.2013 22:02 half wrote:
Yeah, I can't claim any smithing expertise here. Indeed I'm now quite an amateur at the game compared to many of you. However, it seems to be doing decently well. I'm not totally sure it was worth all the experience -- I think it is a pretty close call. A polearm master without an artefact polearm would be pretty sad though, so I'm glad I made one.

I highly doubt delmereth would be enough for a getting a Sil under pressure, unless I'm mistaken in thinking that criticals don't count for much in getting sils? But then I would also be anxious going into the throne room with danger, I think I would try to create an artefact with song of sharpness (or a sharp weapon if you can manage it).

This character does look fairly strong, and fun.

On 4.3.2013 22:08 debo wrote:
Criticals work same as normal on the crown. The harder part for stealthy folks is that I think you don't get an assassination bonus. However, without subtlety or finesse, I doubt that will be enough.

The glaive with a strength pot by itself (maybe w/ the strength gloves) would probably work for 1 sil, if you had a few rounds to try.

My biggest worry about diving right now is your lack of a digger -- all it's going to take is one unlucky earthquake to really screw up your day.

This does look fun to play! And I'm glad that you're enjoying the Balrogs. I'm fairly happy with how they've turned out (although they do drive a further gap between extremely strong characters, who can destroy them without using resources, and merely good ones).

Good luck with the throne room! I agree that you could get a Silmaril out with the glaive and a Strength potion; at a quick estimate I think you'd expect to take 5ish attempts, but of course it's easy to get unlucky, and I don't know how to weigh that against danger. Delmereth would be slightly better than the Glaive without a potion of Strength, but the fact that you can't get the extra damage sides probably outweighs the superior criticals.

clouded & debo: Yes, I found that trumpet of blasting a while ago. They are great things, and I actually found two of them. I haven't yet had to use its escape capability, but it gives me a reason to hang out at 900 ft or shallower in case I need it. It has also let me kill a Silent Watcher (they take about two blasts, which is all I can manage).

Scatha: thanks for the advice. I'll ditch the swords and do things Polearm style.

clouded: an artefact granting song of sharpness is also a cool idea, as it would allow me to get more value from my glaive. I might try that. I haven't really tried Este yet, which I think is a fairly large mistake on my part.

I should add that the depths of Angband really feel appropriately scary with this character. Dark and shadowy, with bursts of flame, and horrible creatures that drain your very life -- not the kind of place one feels like waiting around in.

If you're having a hard time killing things, a sharpness artefact plus enough song to use it might be tough -- actually, given your setup, Song of Slaying might be more useful in the throne room. I really don't think you'll need sharpness to nab a Silmaril.

Is 10 will enough to use that trumpet reliably? I'd be scared to shoot it at a silent watcher in case you whiff your second shot and end up with 0 voice and a pissed-off statue screeching your head off :)

Sorry, when I said "might be tough", I meant accruing enough experience to make it all work together.

I'm curious about your riposte... do you get many? They'd have to miss you by 16, right? But, you have a godly evasion. If you got 1 in 4, or 5 ripostes from attacks against, that would be good to know. When I think 6 pound I don't think riposte, but dang, +27 evasion! Cool character. As far as song of slaying, I find somewhere around +13, +14 song bonus, it starts to take off, if you go whirl and twirl in the throne room, at least. Don't forget to pop the grace potion. Good luck!

debo: Failed trumpet use doesn't cost voice, but due to randomness it is possible that the second blast leaves them just alive. I only do this when I can run away!

debo: We did set a floor on how much benefit Este should provide at some point. It is now a minimum of x2 regen, which should be good with my existing regen. It used to be possible to get x1 (i.e. no improvement) or x0 (i.e. no regen at all!).

HM: Yeah, I get a riposte about 20% of the time. Much more against some things like Kemenraukar or Giants, and much less against things like Vampire Lords. I'd forgotten there was a weapon weight component to it. My feeling is that it is pretty good for me, but that since I don't get much from the pre-req, the experience could be better spent elsewhere.

all: Slaying sounds worth a try. I tend to kill groups very quickly. Controlled Retreat + Whirlwind is pretty much as useful as Flanking + Whirlwind against groups: it lets you get an attack on everyone *and* not let all of them get attacks back.

Well, I'm finally back from a long trip abroad, so I thought I'd see if I could rescue Varien from Angband's depths. Alas, she fell in Morgoth's Hall after a very exciting fight. Many Pink Easter Eggs of Rage were consumed and there was a lot of impressive ducking and weaving, with rage/knock back/controlled retreat. Exchange places saved me a few times, but I needed more than that to get on top of the situation. My guess is that the throne room should have been winnable more than half the time with very good play by this character, but I probably played it a little too quick.

I did really enjoy the sense of not quite being able to hold my own at 900/950 ft and eventually being forced into an underprepared fight for my life at 1000 ft.

I'll also attack a screenshot or two.
