I have since been re-starting from this save point (i.e. just before the descent to 1000 ft) to try and figure out how to handle the throne room. Does anyone have any suggestions? I took a seriously different tack with this character, going with Smithing-HighEvasion-Archery. This worked out very well; I was nearly unhittable for the first 400 ft, and the archery criticals (and crippling shot) were remarkably effective against serpents and such like. The ability to Smith +3 arrows was very nice. And Rauko-bane was very handy, although I decided to pass on Vallach (and tip of the hat to Listen for giving me the option). I decided to rush past 950 ft - I ran out of Restoration Herbs, and I worried about the Master Vampires.

I have some exp. to play with (and significantly more after I descend), but I haven't been able to figure out a scheme to get though the throne room. Thoughts?

I honestly think you're making this unnecessarily hard by avoiding stealth play. Try dumping all the XP into stealth, maybe buying disguise, and going through the secret passage behind V's throne. Short of that silent watcher in that final passage before the throne itself, this should be cake (you may have to use stealth mode)

To get to a place where you can use it to its potential appears to require you to gimp everything else.
