My latest and best attempt at the "no magic" challenge. Let me say immediately that this is a save-scummed character: I died twice on the way down. But I learn more each time I do this. This is not quite the right combination of skills, but I think it is getting close.

I find I have a lot of trouble with 650 ft. I want a lot of skills to survive (Listen, Poison Reistance, Sprinting), but also need high Melee in order to deal with the cat warriors. So I've been trying to rush down to 450 ft, and then go very slow from there until I get the experience I need. With no source of Sharpness, I need to use critical hits in order to kill things like serpents. For this character, I tried starting out with Melee (7 points; to get Zone of Control), and then switching to Archery (easier to get criticals). It seemed to work pretty well, although I'm guessing a pure stealth archer or stealthy-stabber character might be better. But I haven't managed to learn how to play stealth characters yet.

I see no hope to kill Morgoth. Even just getting the first Silmaril out was a challenge; took half a dozen attempts. And the ascent was impossible.

So far (for me at least), this challenge remains tantalizingly just outside of my abilities.

[And I don't know what's up with the Shadow Cloak dropped by Belegwath. That shouldn't have happened given the source mods I have in place. I'll just have to dig into the code to find the problem.]

Wow, impressive. Just nabbing a silmaril is a pretty big accomplishment to me with all of these restrictions.

You might not need all those abilities if you did a stealth archer instead of a noisy one (as you mentioned)... you could probably avoid Will altogether and the investment in stealth would make it less likely that you need things like Poison Resistance.

Stealth is the only skill in the game where you can get +5 to it just by pushing a key on the keyboard (outside of wizard mode) :)

I'd cut melee altogether and take Versatility right off the bat. I'm guessing you're not allowed to take flaming arrows, which sucks but also saves you XP in the archery tree, so versatility is almost a no-brainer.

The dragon-horn bow you have is awesome (esp. for heavily armored things), but if you can find a 1-2lb shortbow it might be good to keep that as a swap just to cripple things with. (I'm fuzzy on the 1.1.1 skill check required for crippling shot to engage, but I think it is still based on total # of crits rather than damage caused?)

It's actually really great for this challenge that half & Scatha changed the bow progression to have damage die more reflective of how swords work, since you now have a "heavy weapons" option for bows when things get thick-skinned. Back in my day, you pretty much needed flaming arrows to get the same effect.

*shakes cane in your general direction*
