You are only CL3. I've removed the extra starting hp that Hengband and Chengband used to give the player. You will need to level up to get more hp. Also, Balrogs are a bit smaller in PosCheng than in Chengband, so won't have as many hp as they used to. (They have 103% life so will have 3% more hp than a human).

If you want a total stomper out of the gates, try playing a Demon monster instead.

Well, it was never a bug. Hengband displays the 'X' to indicate that the square has not been "detected" so it may or may not have a trap. This is for ASCII graphics. For the tileset, you simply get a lighter shade of black which is probably easier on the eyes. The option that governs this behavior is called "view_unsafe_grids" and I've begun defaulting it to off. Usually, I turn this on once I get a rod of trap location so I can no whether or not I have detected traps in a particular region.

For ascii users, the feature that governs the display (in f_info.prf) is
N:196:UNDETECTED
E:unknown grid (not detected)
G:x:D
W:1

You can change the display character if you like. For example:
"G:?:D" might be less confusing.
