Another attempt at melee/evasion only. Notably I haven't taken any abilities yet either, but I'm sure that will change soon enough.

Just found the Feanorian lamp which is a godsend to drop when darkness foes are around.

I didn't realize you could really meet Nan and Gilim at the same depth. Might be fun to tangle with both of them at once :)

Took Crowd Fighting, Finesse and Zone of Control. Not sure what else I want. Heavy armour use may help, but perhaps I should just keep pumping evasion? The point of Strength from the melee tree would be nice, but expensive given its prereqs.

Oh and I forgot I took the Dex point from the evasion tree.

25 Evasion is already good. I'd get Heavy Armor Use and Charge, and continue upping the Melee and Evasion.

Remember, when "Charge" your hits will act as if you had Glend + 7 STR!!

I was actually going to suggest heavy armor use earlier, since you appear to be wearing heavyish stuff. I'm probably crazy, actually, I am, but I like my min damage number to be higher, almost as much as the max protection numbers to increase on the top-end, and heavy protection auto-nets you a 1 there.

Ah, Angrist! At least you know you'll be able to net a silmaril as fast as possible.

The 3 dex / 5 con alloc was very clever given that you knew you'd be dumping so much into melee and evasion so fast.

With the addition of Delmereth, I wonder if parry, riposte, subtlety and rapid attack will be the way to approach my good friend...

You'll also probably want momentum or something.

With this gear and Delmereth, a strength potion would leave you with 8 STR, easily giving the full bonus of 4 dice.

Would have liked to raise skills much higher, but abilities have been very expensive recently! Not hit any of the greater vaults yet for the extra XP, but I think I have one on this level judging by the number of chests I can see (but won't be able to open...)

Can't you bash them? That would be nice if you can't already. Also, didn't notice you had momentum already.

I didn't add momentum until after your last comment. Starting to look good, though Thingol is what I really want now.

How are you going to deal with Gorthaur / Glaurung trying to entrance you if you meet them in the throne room? I dunno if 1 source of free action is going to cut it...

Wow..how did you take out the big V?

On 15.2.2013 16:29 Psi wrote:
@Hugo - I went to the western corridor and broke tension there. When Morgoth arrived, I buffed up and went one handed with Delmereth using Rapid attack and subtlety. Unfortunately Gorthaur showed up behind him and I got entranced and then rudely awoken by Grond! I then dug a zigzag corridor to the right to try and stay out of Gorthaur's LoS - and sadly connected with the rooms on other side! I then went raging to try and control V on one side and a new swarm of monsters on the other. However whilst raging I couldn't seem to hurt V - I'm wondering if my rapid attack was hitting the wrong target? Gorthaur got LoS on me again so I stepped out of the corridor leaving V in it and C unable to see me. Once rage had worn off I was finally able to start dropping stars off him. It was slower than I am used to, but he fell in the end. I was pleased that he didn't manage to land any earthquake blows when I had him in the tunnel.

On 15.2.2013 16:34 Psi wrote:
You can't see it in this dump now, but one of the key things to the deeper levels was keeping a Feanorian Lamp in my inventory. Whenever anything dark approached I dropped it on the floor and fought on top of it. Similarly on the way up, I would drop spare silmarils whenever dark monsters would gang up on me. The worst foes were Hithrauker. I barely ever saw one despite SeeInv and was constantly hallucinating from getting engulfed...

On 15.2.2013 16:36 debo wrote:
I try to do that light-dropping thing as much as I can at deeper levels, but I always find myself losing the light when I have to flee -- often times it's sort of a decision of "do I risk getting hit at this low HP while I take a turn to pick up the lamp, or do I just run and try to circle back for it?"

Awesome run here, and great story from the throne room :) It's kind of hilarious to think of your guy just standing there paralyzed and drooling while V whacks him with a giant mallet :D

Grond makes for one hell of an alarm clock.

I've noticed before that rage will remove your second attack if the attack-multiple-creatures occurs. I haven't kept track, but I assume it always works that way, but as you know my assumptions are often wrong!

In my opinion, this is the 'purest' Morgoth killer yet. No ridiculous slaying bonus from singing (which is starting to feel cheesy when I do it), no overpowered items created from smithing (not that there's anything really wrong with that), no Morgoth crippling 'tricks', such as cruel blow, crippling shot, etc... (which I've always felt a bit unfair). Amazing, again!

I'm glad you at least had a scary ascent!

BTW Darrowdelf seems a bit rubbish to me. I'd take a Dwarven Mask of Defiance over it any day and in this game even a Helm of Defiance +1. It really needs rFear or some other bonus.

@HM. Thanks! I get a bit panicky when things take a turn and I found myself trapped in a corridor between two invisible Hiths and I just couldn't kill them as my HP started to drop dangerously... It was only when I stopped and looked at the combat roles that I realised I was only ever getting 1d11 from Delmereth and hence wasn't scratching them and they were getting through my limited protection. Swapping Idril out for my corslet and my Nargothrond Greatsword back in instantly turned the tables as they struggled to get through my protection and if I connected, they were in big trouble.

Psi: Is that a sign that you just don't think much of Strength in Adversity?

Congratulations, of course. Fun read :)

@Scatha - I guess so! It is not something I would ever consider taking. I would never want to be below 50% health, so I'd never benefit.

@Psi - I noticed that you never took up Dodging/Sprinting. Why not? Being in your shoes, I almost always need a way to 'run' when monsters get out of hand.

Just my two cents,
Hugo

@Hugo - whilst I used to take sprinting (and still would with a weak stealth/archer build), I discovered that I don't need it and hence can save the xp to use elsewhere. There are very few situations I would run from - worm overload is one and they aren't that quick :)
