Trying for polearm mastery but killed when claiming Boldogs spear. Too bad.

Polearm mastery frustrates me because I've never managed to get it to work in the early game, and then by the time I get to the mid/late game I've generally taken enough melee abilities that it is really expensive for what you get.

The -1 Con was probably the clincher here. Also, Boldog's spear may have been a bit of an improvement for you, but it's certainly not worth dying for :)

Here's a hint -- you don't really need all those abilities and different skills at 350'. Try going straight melee and evasion or invest in 2 melee, 1 eva 1 stealth for the first 400-500' and see how far you get. You really only need one melee ability and that's it (e.g. finesse or power) to get to ~500'. Disguise is another good choice.

I've never had Elbereth really work reliably for me as an escape in the early game. Usually when I find myself needing it, I'm already fucked. It _is_ good as a no-stealth character to help you choose your battles, but I still end up killing everything.

Wow look at that wall of text!! Too much espresso :/

Elbereth is best used early, when enemies you know you can't handle start approaching (or notice you, anyway). Having low health tends to counteract the effect (because it improves monster morale). It also doesn't work well on archers because they stay far enough away to mute the effect (song power falls off with distance).

Also, maybe there were enemies out of sight on the right, but run to the stairs! Better to lose whatever is on the level than have the character die.

Running would have been really easy here too... I really should run away more often, even if it hurts. Next time I will not take much abilities and invest only in skills, then decide for melee abilities after I find some weapons. And even here I could have taken a combined 3 points evasion and melee right away.

I believe polearm mastery, focused attack, opportunist and majesty/elbereth/a collection of slaying spears can make a nice combination but probably works best when your melee skill is high enough already to profit from the large spear criticals. But would you take finesse or power with a spear none feels right, but you need one of them later for follow-through, opportunist anyway?

Yeah it's a great combo but getting there means your basic skills are going to be :O

And by the time I'm at a point in the game where XP builds up fast enough to get that going, that combo is much more expensive because of previous abilities bought (Lorekeeper + master, melee, potentially Inner Light)

Finesse and power can both work really well -- big die great spears can be forged really light, so you can go for crits with a 1d14 weapon. You can also use spears 1-handed with a shield and go finesse as well -- and I imagine with Momentum now, this could be very strong. Glaives work very well with Power, Charge, and all those good ones.

I've yet to met a successful polearm master out of the starting gate. I've tried a few different techniques too. I can switch to polearm by mid or late game, but by then, 3d and 4d weapons nearly always dish more damage. I'd like to be proven wrong with a really good polearm character, but for me, it seems like a character-concept fun build, but not really optimal. I've had dreams of a character 2handing a half-weight sharp cold spear (1.5) lbs and getting mad crits, but, I can't seem to ever get there. Probably the biggest hurdle for me is the loss of shield for 2h, or the lack of damage 1h. If you could manage to get the spectrum of slaying spears early, problem solved. Before smithing good spears got expensive, it was more viable, but even then I couldn't cope with the stat losses. Okay, there is my wall-o-text on the matter. I still play polearm characters, they are fun.
