Help needed. I'm standing on top of the stairways to meet V. Can I beat him using melee, or should I try a different method?

You need a stealth player to advise, but from my viewpoint, I don't think you will be able to kill V. I suppose there isn't a reason you cannot try, but if the stars aren't dropping fast enough, you can always abort and go back to the main objective.

I don't think you have enough sustained firepower to kill V with your current gear and setup. V regens a decent amount of hp per round, and has around 500 hp, and in this version he gets a chance to resist cruel blow. You don't have sharpness and only one attack, so I'm assuming you're counting on repeated assassinations and opportunist strikes for !!!!!'s. I would love to be proven wrong, your character looks like something I would like to play if I could wrap my head around stealth. Maybe make a backup save and replay it after the real run... I often do this for fun and learning.

I would also be a little concerned about cutting a silmaril, if it doesn't come out quick, maybe go hunting for a big sword or axe.

Also, 108,000 before throne room... that is amazing!

Your biggest liabilities are low evasion and low damage output. You have a ton of experience but you bought every ability in the book lol, so your basic skills are low.

I think V will pancake you, but it's worth a shot I guess. That feanorian mithril longsword is badass but unless you have big plans for it, I would drop it before going down -- Danger is not what you want in V's hall.

I don't think you have a chance to beat him this time around. If you do, probably your best bet is the mattock for damage output -- with your strength and a potion of strength, that should be 5d10 or so, right? But neither your protection nor evasion are very good, so you will likely get flattened while you try. The biggest problem when I try is not how much HP he has but how fast he regenerates -- if you manage to kill him at all it has to be quickly. Without sharpness and with so little protection and evasion, you will probably fail.

I'd remove that helm of brilliance whatever you decide to do -- it's rather damaged. And don't forget to equip a shield if you decide to grab a silmaril and run instead of taking on Morgoth with a two-handed weapon.

If you're not using Two-Handed weapons I'd equip Hador's shield for extra protection to go along with Glamdring.

If you have enough points to spare, get Subtlety and then use Delmereth (because of its criticals) to at least get the first Sil out.

Wow thanks for all your answers.

I'm a one-handed weapon person.. using finesse and subtlety. Follow -Through Whirlwind and Crown Fighting gives me the edge against hordes. But I fear that if V resists critical I have no chance against him.

I've gone downstairs and open all the chest I could without making contact. Found Barahir, Fingolfin and Swan, and a dagger of accomplishment.
Drop the helm of brilliance (thanks jdh!) for a crown of defiance. Finally I have fear res.
Now I think I can try 2 things. I have staff of slumber, or I can try to knock the crown off V's head.

On 4.2.2013 13:27 debo wrote:
I don't think you'll have any trouble knocking the crown off V's head -- that is relatively easy to do. I'd turn off Charge if you're going to use Delmereth or anything else one-handed for that, as the extra criticals from Assassination will probably be more helpful.

The slumber route might be a bit safer, but I think monsters unwary monsters become wary if it fails, and there are a LOT of monsters in the throne room. I also don't think your will is particularly spectacular, so the stabbity strategy is IMO the beter one.

Finally, if you're busily sneaking around, Maeglin's armor is much better -- you don't lose much in the way of protection, and it's wayyyyy lighter (which would give back +2 or 3 to stealth). You can always swap to the heavier / strengthier armor if things go badly.

What did you use to get the 1st Sil out...Delmereth?

On 5.2.2013 23:50 Ignatius wrote:
Done!
Thanks for the help.
V was way to powerful for me.
I used the Slumber staff, after using every last gear which gives + to Will.
After that it was *really* scary trying to break a Slimaril off the crown.
Had to use !Str and !Dex and Rage Mushroom.
Used Gladmdring (found Angrist only on the way back, go figure) single handed gave me the edge to break a Silmaril.
After that I just ran and ran.

Stealth helps *a lot* with the escape. Trying to escape WITHOUT stealth is tough, but doable and interesting as well.
