Nibelungs are one of the stronger races so would make a nice alternative to Hephaestus. You still have automatic protection from corrosion for all your gear which is very strong, and still get 2 powers to pick. So I think Hephaestus is a stronger choice than a Nibelung. (Aside: Demigods are +0 stealth and Nibelungs are +1 and the help files are accurate for races, classes and personalities).
