Been diving through dungeons and killing the dungeon guardians as I find them. I'm hesitant to go further into the giant's hall because large rocks hurt like hell. On the first level of the castle I found a ridiculous door mimic pit, it was huge. Still got a couple places in depth to look at... A couple of mountain areas and the chameleon's den.

If I have detection/esp I go to the Dragon Caves around clvl 30-35. Or as pure caster/good ranged/Magic Device user, Anti-melee Cave around 25.

But I never choose Shrew for spellcasters because I want as much Con as possible for HP. I've lost too many character because they just didn't had enough HP to survive the same kind of situations (breathes most of the time).

Yeah, mages can do that. They are the most powerful in the end game but somehow, you need to survive that long. I can offer some tips if you like:

[1] The order you choose your spell realms is important. The second realm has a +5% fail rate penalty and you can only gain Expert skill in spells from this realm. Since becoming a Master in a spell confers another -1% fail rate bonus, the second realm is effectively +6% to fail rates. Also, Mages can switch realms in mid game, but they switch their second realm so be sure that your first realm is one you wish to keep all game.

[2] Chaos is a powerful offensive realm, but you need Magic Rocket to gain mid level power. This comes in the 3rd spellbook at L35. A better offensive realm for starting out with a mage is Armageddon, which offers crazy early offense, including the Rocket spell in the 2nd spellbook at L34. So you can be assured of having enough firepower to survive the mid game (DL40s) even if you can't find your third spellbook. Another alternative realm is Crusade, but then you can't really handle non-evil monsters well.

[3] If you can stomach playing with just a single spell realm, than High-Mages are way more powerful than ordinary mages. They gain bonuses to spell capacity, spell fail rates, spell casting costs and even do more damage with their spells, which they learn at earlier levels to boot. But you pretty much have to play without detection in the early game which can be frustrating and need to pick a strong offensive realm so you won't be as flexible as a mage would.

[4] Mindflayers make great mages, but you don't really need their innate telepathy with the Sorcery realm. You could try a race that would have more hp (Dunadan, High-Elf, Athena Demigod are all good alternatives).

[5] Also, Shrewd costs you hp. I usually play Shrewd mages as well but if you aren't allergic to end game spell failings, you could try some other personality. You might get 80 more hp in the end game with Patient, for instance, not counting the extra +3 Con. But you pay +4% higher fails and get -3 Int relative to Shrewd, so it is a difficult choice to make.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I was desperate for the 3rd chaos book, I found tons of other high level books and wondered about trying to switch since I was having no luck.

I'll try another mage or mage-type sometime, with the comp going I'll try some dragon action first and see how that goes.
