My best attempt by a mile. Don't really have a plan yet though. I guess the shortbow may be the best bet for V, but not sure how to tackle the throneroom.

Key finds/moments...

Dailir was fantastic for one shot kills using flaming arrows.

I had already easily killed several cold Ds when one that was fleeing entranced me and then returned to take a bite. I found myself on 10HP adjacent to an angry dragon. I thought I was dead. I used my turn to fire an arrow and thankfully it killed it. Phew. I still played the rest of the game without FA, but was a lot more cautious of dragons...

Killing V was not too bad. I took out the silent watcher with sharp arrows and then lured V up his back passage. He got away one earthquake attack before he fell. However the earthquake blocked the way to where his crown had fallen! I had to negotiate my way through the middle of the throne room to get to it. Whilst exploring nearby to find an appropriate weapon to start prising I stood on a deadfall trap alerting an unrelenting horror. I then had to take the damn thing on out in the open. Thankfully buffing up I was able to drop it and then go for the crown.

On the ascent another cold D twice managed to confuse me through my clarity helm when I was also engaged with other foes - thank goodness it did that rather than entrance...

I might have another go at it in the next few days. Haven't had too much free time to play lately and the little I've had has been spent reading the last Wheel of Time book. Extremely disappointing book. Been waiting almost 20 years to see how it was going to end and it was really horrible. Oh well.

Congratulations, nice result there. Reading your notes was fun too.

I'm glad Dailir was worth keeping! In development we kept on increasing the bonus it gave as it has to work hard to justify the inventory (/quiver) slot.

Any views on the new bow numbers?

On 15.1.2013 10:08 Psi wrote:
On my first encounter with Vallach, I was clearing some rubble to give myself a longer corridor between us. However this brought me to his attention immediately! I fired Dailir at him but he was soon adjacent and I had to leg it. I actually then worked out a circular route around the nearby rooms that would keep me sprinting, enable me to pick up Dailir again and get to the stairs - all the time with Vallach in the square behind me. That arrow was that valuable to me.

As I mentioned earlier, the fact that it doesn't burn up using flaming arrows makes it very useful - and obviously the accuracy bonus gives you a much better chance of crippling.

I must admit that I didn't like the sound of the bow numbers, but they seemed to play out well and opened up new avenues. For example I couldn't take out a silent watcher with my shortbow and sharpness as I just couldn't do enough damage without criticals, however switching to a longbow with the extra dice made it possible. I imagine bows like Wyrm's End and the Dragon Horn longbows will appeal more to warrior builds then specialist archers though due to their weight - might actually make a small investment in archery worthwhile.

Speaking of Silent Watchers - what is it that sets them off? I initially started shooting at the one below Morgoth's throne with my shortbow and did no damage at all, but of course woke it and drew its attention. I tried a couple more shots before switching to the longbow and it then took another 5 or 6 arrows to kill it. However it never once screamed (or whatever it is that they do).

On 15.1.2013 12:07 Scatha wrote:
Silent Watchers: with Deathblades, these are I think the only monsters in Sil where the Angband-style attention radius is still used (normally this is displaced by the stealth mechanics). I think Silent watchers only take actions if they have noticed you _and_ you are within two squares.

Nice story with Dailir!
