This is a smith with enough flexibility to develop in different directions. But I usually die somewhere 500-600 nonetheless. Advice?

What usually kills you?

Changes a lot, usually the situation deteriorates when I find a forge and feel I have to clean the area before smithing or when I get too greedy and try to get the most out of special areas and then have to face harder monsters that take too long to kill.

The stats look good now for my taste - I never had a smith +17/+17 at this depth, but 6 evasion points depend on the weapon and shield, but when I need more damage output suddenly I am very easy to hit. I guess the combination of low damage output, no resistance starts to hurt against many opponents soon.

The way your build is going, I'd be looking at pumping Evasion and picking up Riposte. You are also going to want a source of rFire pretty soon. If you're staying one-handed then blocking on a big shield helps against the breathers (and archers of course).

I found Narsil on the ground :). Then picked two-weapon-fighting to combine benefits, parry (was from gloves before), riposte, subtlety (should have read the text better), rauko-bane (I now see them without needing an amulet). At least against enemies without critical resistance I have a ridiculous high damage output. Killed the easterling and giant uniques and now I sit on a pile of artefact swords. Orcrist, Narsil, Dagmor, Feanorian, Glend (not to mention all the enchanted ones that I dropped earlier.)

No forge this time. 600ft.

Luxury problems - which artefact sword should I dump?

Dump the Longsword of Feanorians, if it makes survival difficult.

Tevildo and Oikeroi got me. (Tried a bit more with a savefile, but this doesn't belong in the ladder.)

Smithing is really awesome - if you find enough forges and have enough mithril.

Sorry to hear of your demise. FYI Feanorians is ego sword rather than artefact.

No problem. It was my first time that deep and I rushed. When trying on a bit somehow it felt easier than the lower depth - especially with all the bonus from bane and master hunter and / or slaying / sharpness almost everything went down.

The last bastion of things that can be super-surprisingly-powerful in the last 100' of the game are

a) very fast monsters that hit incredibly hard (f and v lords / uniques)

b) Big breathers (red Ds and all S + dragon uniques), although this is usually your own fault since they are territorial

c) Too many crazy dark monsters in a room

Once you learn how to deal with these, you're going to have a lot more fun at 800'+ :)

Probably I should improve my early game so I see that part more often. :)
