So, I really suck at archers but thought I'd give this comp a go. Probably should put a bit into stealth and such but I'm no good with stealth builds. Just gonna have to hope he can last long enough to start doing some decent dmg.

Made myself a longbow and now starting to do some okay dmg. Still need more light but thinking about grabbing Song of the Trees. Think that'll do the trick.

I must have killed off 30+ Belegs so far. All of them diving like maniacs under the assumption that I need to kill Morgoth and claim all three silmarils in under 15k turns to have a chance. So just how much do you "really suck at archers"... :)

On 8.1.2013 09:32 WildKhaine wrote:
I killed off about a dozen or so before this one. None made it past 200' or so. And I really suck at archers. Mainly because I forget he's supposed to be an archer and try to slug it out. Which doesn't end well for me most of the time :)

I have an idea in mind for this guy but not sure how it'll work. Never tried Mastery before. What's the range on it? Does it only affect adjacent monsters? Or does it have a bit of a radius? Was kind of thinking that with Slaying for the throne room with some other goodies. Just an idea.

On 8.1.2013 09:50 Psi wrote:
Mastery is fantastic with high song. It decays over distance, so the radius depends on how high you pump it. This was my first mastery/slaying winner as an example: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=13422

Slaying obviously works best with a raging melee character, I can't see it being nearly so effective with an archer - unless you are eschewing this character's archery roots?

On 8.1.2013 10:10 WildKhaine wrote:
No, going to stick to archery for the most part. Yeah, Slaying does work best with a raging melee character. Haven't had much experience trying to take Morgy with archery. Was thinking I might need the extra bonus from Slaying for him but maybe Concentration + Rapid Shot might be enough. With the other goodies from Archery too. Still think I might go with Mastery to help in the throne room. No idea what other than dex I might grab from Evasion.

On 8.1.2013 10:20 Psi wrote:
I'd go with blocking from the evasion tree. With so few HP, you need all the protection you can get from ranged attacks - particularly all the bad breath that seems to lurk in the depths. I haven't taken sprinting for a long time, but I figure that might help when things get tricky. Current char is down at 500ish without a point in Evasion yet... he won't last much longer.

On 8.1.2013 10:34 WildKhaine wrote:
500' with no evasion? Nice. I tried that on a few runs and none of them managed to live very long. Thanks for the advice. Blocking might be a good idea. Not sure about Sprinting. It's useful but other things I'd rather use the xp for I think.

On 8.1.2013 21:22 WildKhaine wrote:
Have to say, one of the most annoying things about archery is having to run around and pick up all your arrows. Waste of turns. Might grab Flaming Arrows soon since I got quite a stash of arrows to burn :)

On 8.1.2013 22:08 WildKhaine wrote:
Starting to get bogged down a bit. Have some decent light sources now and dmg is good. Got a pair of Speed boots so that might help a bit. The rate this game is going, probably won't finish in under 25k turns.

On 9.1.2013 05:31 WildKhaine wrote:
Used a couple down shafts to make up a bit of time but probably gonna miss that xp. Things are looking pretty decent, still need a bit better gear.

Grabbed Song of Mastery and it's working out fairly well so far. Probably going to dump xp into Archery for awhile. Can't think of any abilities I really need atm so probably wait and grab'em a few right before the throne room.

On 9.1.2013 06:25 WildKhaine wrote:
So, just need to clear out 950' and think I should be ready for Morgy. Really would like some more healing items but oh well. Might find a few this level.

Going to grab Concentration and Rapid Shot before heading down. Otherwise the rest of my xp will go to Archery. Can't really think of anything else I'd need for this character.

On 9.1.2013 07:30 WildKhaine wrote:
Finished clearing 950', found a few good items. Sitting at the stairs getting ready to head down to the throne room.

Have no clue how this is going to go. At this point, if it hits me I'm pretty much dead. So, the key is to keep everything at a distance. Oh yeah, I'm gonna die :)

On 9.1.2013 09:10 Psi wrote:
So this is you sucking at archery... 10k turns and about to take on the throne room!

All the best!

On 9.1.2013 09:25 WildKhaine wrote:
Yep, this is me sucking. With the changes in Crippling Shot, think V is gonna to be a real pain in the ass.

On 9.1.2013 09:34 Psi wrote:
I would have to say that getting any non-stealth build to the throne room in 10k turns ranks way above sucking.

V may be troublesome, but I'd almost be more worried about high will entrancers - can Gorthaur entrance?

On 9.1.2013 09:49 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, believe he can.

On 9.1.2013 09:50 WildKhaine wrote:
I actually have an easier time with non-stealth characters.

On 9.1.2013 10:52 WildKhaine wrote:
Well, was doing alright. Got my Slaying bonus up to +25, which ain't too bad for an archer. Was whittling Morgy down when I screwed up and ended up cornered. Morgoth is definitely much harder to Cripple now :( Oh well, was kind of fun. Might do another before the comp is over.

On 9.1.2013 11:04 Psi wrote:
Unlucky.

In a purely selfish way, at least the competition is still on. If you'd have pulled off the win, I don't think anyone could have caught you.

I tried to do it the hard way but guess it was a bit too challenging for me. I suck :( Guess I should go back to melee builds, I do much better with those.

Good luck to everyone in the comp.

I enjoyed messing around with Mastery this game. Very handy ability. Not so much for an archer though. Definitely going to do a Song/Melee build soon

On 9.1.2013 14:04 debo wrote:
It seems to me that you'd want a shortbow now for fighting V -- many more damage sides than the heavier bows and more likely to crit if you can find a light one. With concentration, I imagine things wouldn't be that much different than in 1.1.0?

Crazy run, anyhow. Are you bowing out of the competition, or are you going to try again? :)

On 9.1.2013 22:45 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, a shortbow might have been better. Definitely would have got better crits and more likely to cripple him. I got him about halfway down before I messed it up. I might do another run before the comp is out. Had enough with archery for the moment though, think I'll go play some melee builds and whoop some ass :)
