debo looked like he was having fun with Calris so present scummed until I got it. Pretty nice so far. Hits really hard, most stuff doesn't last past the first one. Good times.

Just have to remind myself to watch out for cold critters. They'll hurt really bad I think.

Could you take a look at my Elebor dump? I found Calris but have not started using it. Already doing well with what I've got and can't see how much -5 melee and lack of shield will negate the improved damage output. Would you go for Calris only at this point? Remember, I'm still aiming for my first win, so no need to kill Morgy or get more than one Silmaril.

On 27.12.2012 13:55 WildKhaine wrote:
Calris is indeed nice. The con bonus and flame brand are helpful but the cold vulnerability does make it a bit tricky. Have to watch what you fight. It does do some nice dmg though. Regularly hitting for 25-30+ atm.

I've been doing a stealth/charger. I build melee, evasion, and stealth fairly equally. Instead of taking assassination and cruel blow from stealth tree, I take Power, Stun, and Knockback from melee instead.

I try to carry around a one-handed weapon with a good melee bonus for hard-to-hit monsters, and an alternate heavy 2-hander for when the cold vulnerability on Calris is a liability. (It doesn't do well against balrogs, either, because you lose the extra damage die from the fire brand.)

Charge helps mitigate the huge melee penalty -- you hit as if you had +3 dex and str when you charge, which effectively gives you +3 to melee and +3 damage sides. (Calris str bonus maxes out at +6, so 3 str is perfect if you use charge.)

I use charge in the early game to hit things I'd otherwise be whiffing on. Also, it's somewhat of a novelty to use it in 1.1 :)

On 27.12.2012 14:20 debo wrote:
Oops, Calris is 11lbs -- so str bonus maxes out at 7 Str (7 * 1.5 = 10.5.)

Good advice. Haven't found a _Sanctity all game and not gonna take Curse Breaking so might be awhile before I can swap weapons.

On 27.12.2012 14:44 debo wrote:
That might be tricky, especially with no stealth. At least you have a lot of light -- seeing a sapphire serpent from 4 squares away gives you time to GTFO.

I think a sapphire serpent at close range could 1-shot you with cold breath.

On 27.12.2012 14:46 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, probably. Doing pretty well on light this game. Like it when I find some good sources early. Haven't run into any cold critters yet except some Snow Trolls and they go down real fast.

I can't remember the last time I found a feanorian lamp before 900' :P

I think this is only the 3rd or 4th game I've found one. Same with Lesser Jewels. I usually only find torches/lanterns in my games. Love the lamps.

On 27.12.2012 18:49 Scatha wrote:
Calris is two-edged against the cold-aligned enemies: since they're almost all vulnerable to fire you'd be hitting for at least 5d11.

At point blank with cold vulnerability a Sapphire Serpent breath would do about 30 damage. An ancient one would be around 50.

On 27.12.2012 19:38 WildKhaine wrote:
Still haven't found a _Sanctity so Calris is still cursed. Was a big pain because couldn't swap out for a digger but found a trumpet of blasting which should do nicely.

On 27.12.2012 19:39 debo wrote:
That's part of the danger of diving so hard :) You prob won't find too many _Sanc at your depth -- I rarely do, at least.

On 27.12.2012 19:43 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, probably. Usually always find one early and carry around just in case. Just haven't had any luck this game when I actually need one. Oh well. One Balrog down with Calris, what a pain.

On 27.12.2012 19:47 WildKhaine wrote:
Just can't seem to decide what abilities to go for with this chick. Been going okay til now but gonna need something more later. Going to grab Str from Melee. Need to figure out where I'm gonna go with this.

On 27.12.2012 19:50 debo wrote:
Charge, stun, knockback are all obvious candidates with Calris or any heavy weapon. You can hit for like 8 damage with Calris and still stun an enemy b/c it's so damn heavy.

If you're going the no-stealth route, any extra attacks you can squeak out would also be a big help -- flanking, etc.

Finally, Calris does kill things very quickly. Song of Slaying would be a lot of fun :)

On 27.12.2012 19:53 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, going to get Stun and/or Knockback. Maybe Charge but I tend to stand in one spot mostly and forget to use it.

Might try flanking this game. It's not something I normally use so be good to give it a go. And of course I'll go in with Slaying/Sharpness. Might grab Rapid Attack too.

On 27.12.2012 19:56 WildKhaine wrote:
If I can ever get Calris uncursed, I could always go two-handed w/ Parry/Riposte. Glamdring + Orcrist will give me +8 evasion. She ain't really set up to take full benefit though. Probably just stick with Calris and work it out.

On 27.12.2012 20:00 WildKhaine wrote:
Well, on the bright side. If I don't get this sword uncursed, I can always break it on the crown :)

I wonder what the odds of a balrog disarming you are? I think if you get hungry enough your str drops, the relevant stat for disarm protection. I'd probably just break down and buy curse breaking before I went to all that difficulty... but just a thought. :)

That doesn't uncurse the weapon though, does it? If you re-wield it, it'll stick to you again right?

I don't think being disarmed would uncurse it. Never had it happen though.

Think I got what I need for the throne room. More consumables would be nice but think I got enough. Gear is good and nice stockpile of xp to spend for the fight. Probably just dive down real quick if I don't see anything good.
