This is about the furthest I've been able to get with a stealth character. Just running away any time anyone sees me. It's really hard to get much XP, the only thing I can plausibly kill is birds. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

I'm judging by your stats this is a pacifist rather than a stabber playstyle you're trying?

Some general advice:
- Take stairs down as soon as you see them, at least early on.
- Stick to the edges of rooms.
- After you have keen senses it's safe to have stealth mode on almost always.
- While exploring, try to head to rooms that are lit up if you have the option.
- Don't bash doors after early on (this usually doesn't come up since you will have good perception).
- Consider following traveling monsters - especially if they hold lights, they often go to stairs and they can reveal where monsters/items are.
- Don't be hesitant to run back to the < and regenerate the level, I do this very often, especially once I get to cat warrior/werewolf depth.
- Stealth essentially becomes perfect, if you have enough the only danger is bumping into monsters, you have to get the hang of predicting their movements.
- Don't worry about XP, it's very easy to get enough stealth and even descending as quickly as possible (950' in 4k turns) you can just about scrounge up the bare minimums.
- I'm a little rusty on this, but I would say that 15 stealth (without stealth mode) is enough to be comfortable that things wont notice you, 20 is enough for Vanish to start being worth it, you need a fair bit more to vanish from Morgoth now however.

This is what I go with:
- Start with disguise and high stealth, get keen senses as quickly as possible, raise stealth more while getting enough perception for lore-master and listen. Song of silence can come whenever you feel like it, though it isn't necessary super early. Now you will likely be around 650', which is the perhaps the hardest part because the most common enemies are fast and have high perception, I get sprinting here to keep myself alive incase I get caught. After this, get enough stealth for vanish to be good and get that, the dex point is probably worth it too. Now you get the stuff you need to get a sil out, song of lorien and sharpness.

You can switch things up and go low stealth/high perception at the start, getting listen first, or get high song and lorien right away. I've not tried the listen start, but T-Mick mentioned he thinks it might be better that way. Starting with lorien works great until 500' when wargs murder you because lorien doesn't work on them and you don't have good enough stealth, but it may be doable that way.

If you want to stab things, I would either just start as a finesse melee type and start getting stealth/assassination/focus after subtlety, or transition from pacifist after getting lorien. Once you dive all the way to 950' you can ascend back up and then start killing weaker things, then descend again as your stabbing potential rises.

Oh another thing: pray you get free action; web traps will be the death of you if you don't.

So I should really just give up on killing stuff and go full pacifism? I tried to do an assassin build earlier but it seems like if you don't focus heavily on stealth you won't be able to sneak up on stuff and if you do you won't be able to kill stuff once you've snuck up on it. Eventually you get a bad stab and just get eaten.

I don't really have a good sense of how helpful song of silence is. It's cheap for a Doriath, but the manual doesn't seem to say how much it helps your stealth.

locus: Yes, it's hard to do an assassin early because you aren't great at either thing, but it's doable in the fasion I mentioned of starting with subtlety first then starting to stab after that. You need to be selective of the things you stab though - you need to make sure you can kill it in one hit, and that if you don't you can finish it, cruel blow helps with that. Never stab pack monsters unless you're sure you can kill them in one blow. Focused attack is also crucial, and Lorien is heavenly.

One key tactic is for unwary, but not sleeping monsters, wait for them to move adjacent to you rather than try and move next to them. This way you have no risk of them bumping into you. Once you get lorien you can get the sleeping bonus for everything which is fairly huge.

Silence is really good, I think it essentially gives a bonus to stealth of 1/2 your song. I was a little dismissive of it, but mainly because I don't have a fixed point in which I get it.

You also want some strength for stabbing, 1 (for 1lb shortblade) or 2 (2lb shortblade or deathblade), you want as many damage sides as you can muster.

Well, I fell through the stairs and got cornered by an orc champion. Maybe I'll try the subtlety-into-assassin build now. I guess I'm just not sure that's actually better than the subtlety-into-more-subtlety build.
