First time building a char using stealth or archery so it'll be a bit of learning experience.

Well, you found the right sword for it.

Remember to hug walls and to avoid making noise (e.g. bashing doors down.) Hugging walls is super helpful to staying out of sight.

Also, get Disguise ASAP. It's not just a precursor to Vanish, it's a great ability in its own right. I've played many a 1.1 stealth character that took Disguise without Vanish.

You're going to hit an annoying point in the midgame (500'-700') when you suddenly can't hurt anything anymore. Flaming arrows will help here, or you can alternately try rushing to Song of Sharpness (very dangerous).

Hopefully you'll find some light-boosting equipment soon, as vision is an especially valuable resource as an archer.

This should be one of the easier characters to play ironman style, IMO. Not that I would ever do such a ridiculous thing :)

Good luck!

Stealth is going to help you the most. I totally agree with debo's advice on this.

I find flaming arrows really useful against uniques and really dangerous monsters. Especially if your archery score is not that high. But... they burn your ammo real quick, especially if your archery score is low and you miss every other arrow. So you don't want it turned on unless you really have to. With ironman maybe not at all, but sometimes you got to make a tough kill to survive.

I do use song of sharpness with archery much more than flaming arrows in the current game. Really helps against things I used to have problems killing before, like the serpents. But then you don't actually have to kill serpents. Usually it's easy to avoid them. This is more expensive in xp than getting flaming arrows, but it does not auto-break each arrow used.

In my last run I got song of silence. This was very useful when bashing doors, meeting screeching monsters and when fighting close to other monsters. Many times the others did not realize there was a fight. Really helps you take them on one-by-one.

I never survived the deeper levels without Exchange places. Of course it is not necessary, but I really like that skill. Saved my ass so many times.

Note that you will break more arrows than 'normal' when using Song of Sharpness as well. There's a higher chance of an arrow breaking if it hits a wall (40% instead of 20%, I believe), and sharpness causes arrows to fly right throw bad guys :)

All I have to say is, you will have fun winning with a Stealth + Archer combo.

Got a bit sloppy and wasn't paying attention to my hp. Oh well, got some experience playing this type of build at least. Thanks for all the tips. They'll come in handy for my next try.

Btdt. So many things to find out, but in average you'll get further and further each game.

Getting trapped in a corridor with many foes in line happens a lot. Orc warriors are tough and numerous in the late early game, later you may have a Rauko and some trolls or cat warriors in line to beat you up. This is where you need to maximize your damage output per turn since escapes through _?... are very rare in this game.

You could turn on the flaming arrows ability (if you have it) which makes a dramatic difference against orc warriors when archery score is still low, or using sharpness song/piercing arrows and keep shooting at point blank. That's often all it takes to take them down quickly. But with a higher archery score you would also do more damage per round and cripple/slow them.

You could use exchange places. Then you can step out of there step by step, getting hit while passing the monsters, but at least with the help of !booze or better you'll probably make it through. With sprinting you can then escape to an up/downstair or outrun the monsters.

I have a hack'n'slash type play style. I tend to like to have good ol' slugfests. Just plant my feet and swing away. Playing a more timid type char like this is a bit of challenge for me. Take a bit of getting used to I think.
