Also, elemental resistances don't help much at all against monsters who use physical branded attacks ("It hits you! You are covered with frost!").

I noticed the Glaive in the log but never realized it was an artifact when I had it. Since my melee score was very low I did not care to test it and I was lacking space as well as weight allowance at the time so unfortunately I ditched it.
What about the Great Axe of Fury (-3, 4d5). Will it be useful later or will my melee never be high enough? I know I need to deal a lot of damage to get the Silmaril but have no idea if the bow can be used. If not, I thought the axe might come in handy. Also sharpness is good I understand.
Hm, why the double post?
On 26.11.2012 19:09 Thraalbeast wrote: Still hanging in there and now with more ammo. Spent many charges of _revelations to find smithies and floors with smithies. I know that _ is good for the ascent, but survival depends on ammo.
Good thing is xp are plentiful so I've been able to boost stealth a lot lately.
On 26.11.2012 19:23 debo wrote: So, I think you're going through so many arrows because a) your archery score is terrible, b) Rapid Fire, and c) I'm guessing you're trying to kill everything?
Also, do you keep Flaming Arrows activated all the time?
As an FYI for later games, you really don't need all those archery abilities IMO. Careful Shot and Point Blank Archery are easy to live without.
On 26.11.2012 19:47 debo wrote: FYI re: endgame, it really depends on whether you're going for 1 Sil or for all of them. I think with this character, if you were to get a big dice weapon (e.g. that battle axe you threw away :D) and quaffed !Str and maybe !Dex, you should be able to do enough raw damage to get the Sil out.
Beyond that one though, you'll probably need Sharpness on your weapon or from Song. Song of Sharpness is particularly badass with archery, because it lets you shoot through several monsters at once if they line up. Concentration is great if you're going to fight Morgy, but I'm not sure you'll be able to afford all that unless you pull a Psi and squeeze the XP out of Angband like water from a stone.
On 26.11.2012 21:15 Thraalbeast wrote: Thanks for more valuable advise.
I use fire only when I have to. But with good stealth score so (way too) late an no exchange places or silence, I got trapped over and over again and had to shoot my way out. With bad foes like troll guards and such I had to kill fast. Same for groups of catpeople etc.
Dropping the glaive was a huge mistake. I was so focused on archery. Did not think about end game. Never made it all the way down before.
Spending xp inefficient is natural, this is my first archer beyond 150ft. Next time will be better, but this is already a good result for me.
Hopefully I'll find a new high dice weapon. And survive at least to see the throne room. don't want to savescum so I have to learn piece by piece.
On 26.11.2012 21:52 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote: Soon enough, you'll find Archery-based character easier to win the game. :)
On 26.11.2012 21:57 debo wrote: Hmmn. Well, if you spend the rest of your turns around 900'-950', you should have no trouble finding a big weapon. Even if that fails, there is a ton of swag in the throne room. I think you should be fine :)
I mean, even that Greatsword of yours should do the trick if you're buffed. (You'd get 3d10 w/ !Str -- I think the first stage of the crown averages 25 protection roll, so eventually you'll get it :)
On 26.11.2012 22:04 Thraalbeast wrote: Saithnar - a great weapon for the endgame! I guess, or will it draw wraiths to me even if not wielded? Would that be a problem at this point?
Also, soon I have 7500 xp which is what it takes to get the song of sharpness. But do I need that song (although good) or do I need more stealth or melee / archery / evasion? All of them are low except stealth, but without rapid fire I hit most targets most of the time.
On 26.11.2012 22:08 debo wrote: Haha you lucky bastard. Hold onto that greatsword with your life!!
With archery you want the score to be high so you get multi-crits. This helps with crippling shot and general damage. Bows are single-die-large-side weapons, so all your damage comes from crits.
If it was me playing this char, I'd probably say "Fuck it" and go for 1 Sil. With that in mind, I'd:
a) pump archery as high as possible, ignoring Song
b) Sneak into the throne room, shoot Morgoth's crown off, then vanish away
c) Wack out a Sil with Saithnar
d) GTFO
Sharpness would be much more important if you were going to give a go at killing Morgy and/or wiping out the throne room, but with 27 (!) stealth, you should be fine to just sneak in, grab the goods, and sneak out.
Make sure you stick to the walls. Even better, you might want to use Morgoth's Secret Hallway, but I won't spoil you any further if you don't know what that is and want to find out on your own.
On 26.11.2012 22:46 Thraalbeast wrote: Luck helps! Dropping the first sharpness artifact was so-so, but finding Saithmar 362 xp before spending 7500 xp on song and song of sharpness including it's prereq song is very nice indeed.
Thanks for helping! I'll make the attempt tomorrow.
I will be very happy even with one Silmaril, there is no way I'm going for two this time.
I know the floor is rectangular with the throne room in the middle and rooms on the side. But not where everything/one are located, although I guess he'll be in the opposite end of where I come down.
The plan is to start by using the staff of revelations. Then to sneak along the outer sides first to understand what and who is there plus to find Morgy. If there is a back door to the throne room this is to be preferred. I'll search for it in the opposite end of the floor.
Escape + Vanish is to be preferred and fighting only if necessary and with song of silence on.
In case of being trapped by surrounding foes I'll try the _Majesty and see if it scares foes off so I can get out of sight and vanish again. Otherwise "X" or possibly Rage + Saithmar but Melee is low so preferrably not.
On 26.11.2012 23:57 debo wrote: I don't think Majesty will work on anything down there except cats and other harmless things (like orcs), and you don't want to be wasting a turn if you're surrounded. Better off hugging the walls/pillars, staying hasted, and exchanging places back into a tunnel if you need to get out of trouble.
It looks like you're out of !Con, which is regrettable. You should still be fine though. Don't be afraid to use !Quickness + Stealth mode to stay nigh-invisible.
It's regrettable that you don't have any _Treasures. If you do find one before you're pushed into the throne room, see if you can use it to farm consumables before the big game.
If you want a huge spoiler, you can watch my stealth/archer throne room gambit on youtube (at tube.com/user/silstreamer). I'd recommend you try it on your own first though :)

I thought stealth 27 would be enough but I did get detected by a vampire in the lower right part with loads of foes nearby. This resulted in much fighting and fleeing, from there all the way up to the NW part where I managed to vanish. I survived, but it drained about half of my stock of !'s.
After that I decided it was time to take a look at the relevant Silstreamer episode and realized I had already been in the right place for the back door but my perception was too low so I did not find it. Also, with a Silent Watcher guarding the room I had not dared hitting the wall.
Finally I had to find the door with ?blasting and as a side effect woke the Silent Watcher. But Song of Silence evidently turned out to be a very good thing when a SW is screeching. Didn't know that before.
Once I got to the position peeking into the throne room, I saw that the mob was in the far north end. My plan was then to shoot a number of monsters that I could kill from distance and then vanish once they got a bit closer and then repeat. IT went well for a while, but Gurthaur was much closer than I knew, invisible or hidden by a pillar or darkness. I did not realize this until he was upon me. At that time I realized I was in sereious problems. And I never managed to get rid of him, I was too slow to escape and too weak to kill him.
Great game! Will try again, probably with an archer again.

You absolutely cannot run from him unless your will is high and you're hasted, and even then it's not a great idea. No shame in dying to him.
As an archer, my only way of dealing with him has been to cripple him and GTFO, or just buff and kill him. But, if he surprises you, you are basically fucked.
Good game! You did very well. Maybe next time, Gorthaur won't even be in the throne room :)
P.S. It's a great idea to have a staff of foes for the throne room, if you can manage it. That lets you know what you're facing beforehand. If Gorthaur is there, you can play more conservatively / safely.

him, meaning Gorthaur; the stupid 'C' we know and love.

I'm thick, it took me three attempts, but I did play spoilerless, unless you count a ladder comment here or there. I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is, I think a win on your first throne room would be quite an accomplishment.

Is he really head and shoulders above the other level 24 creatures (Ungoliant, Gothmog, Glaurung)? They are all canonically beings of tremendous power and I'm not sure which should be the toughest if encountered in Angband. Sauron/Gorthaur is the one I'd least like to be in a war with, but maybe Gothmog would be the toughest in combat? I seem to recall he saves Morgoth from Ungoliant, which suggests Gothmog > Ungoliant > Morgoth in single combat.

(Glaurung and Ungoliant are territorial, which makes escaping significantly easier.) If you're not prepared for him he can easily kill you before you realize how much trouble you're in -- also true when stepping into LoS of a dragon -- but less true with Morgoth and Gothmog, who take a bit more time about it. If you are playing a stealth character, Vallach is challenging for the same reason, though perhaps not quite as dangerous.

Without _foes or perfect sneaking and taking notes, this part of the game should always be a high risk adventure in my opinion.
I don't remember if I had a _foes or not this game. I usually do, but if I did it was only one and that was in the mid game when I had inventory space problems. Next time I'll aim for having a _foes before descending to 1000 ft, at least if effective stealth is less than 30
