Posting this because I'm not sure where to take this character. (Advice welcome!) I could start pumping XP into Stealth and win as per my usual method, but this is the latest in dozens of attempts to do a more melee-oriented win. :) I'm thinking I probably need melee and evasion up to about 30, and Will up a bit more, to do this. Some lucky finds would be nice, but Catskin (admittedly very nice to find at the beginning) and Orcrist seem to be the best the RNG has managed so far. (I don't think I've even seen a Shield of Frost or a Cloak of Warmth other than the ones I've made, and I've explored most of the levels I've been on!) Consumables are also kind of low...

Loving opportunist for melee characters, it's great for taking care of fleeing enemies and archers. The tough decision is when to get it, not whether to. Is it a bug or intentional that it doesn't trigger follow-through, though?

Besides being the first time (I think) I've found Catskin, this is also the first time I've seen the glyph of warding vault. My first reaction was: monsters can use staves?

Question for others more experienced than I: how much is rapid attack worth? At what point should I take it over more points in melee?

I wish I had better advice, but I can at least offer that I try to hit +25 melee ability for my attacks. I find 25 misses very rarely. But, I usually play raw damage warriors with heavy weapons, and don't count on more than one, if any, criticals. Your build is too different for me to have any decent advice, but, I love the armor!
I usually pass on flanking since my melee tree gets expensive, but it's a great ability. I haven't had much luck with rapid attack, but it seems like a great ability, at least for fights you would buff up for, but maybe for the rank and file monsters it could be weaker than just one strong strike.

FYI: Catskin is legit armor that was put in by half/Scatha. ;)

Opportunist and many other free attacks don't trigger more free attacks. The only types of attack that trigger more attacks are normal, flanking, controlled retreat, because these ones take your whole turn to do. At least i think that is right. This is described in the manual.

I think rapid attack is strong -- especially if you have a great weapon that you would otherwise be too strong for.

Character is looking pretty good, seem to have most of things I would like at this point. I agree with HM that +25 is a pretty safe place to have your melee.

From here I think what I would do is keep upping melee/evasion a bit, and get the point of Con from will - If you can get rF from somewhere else I would definitely use Fingolfin's shield too. I would also keep in mind exchange places, especially for the throne room. Perhaps getting the dex point from the stealth tree would be good too.

Again I agree with HM that I haven't liked rapid attack that much for general fighting purposes, but it would be worth getting for the throne room, since you will likely be doing all the fighting there with !str and !dex so it will be pretty nice.

You do seem a little light on healing on a second look. Hopefully you can find a staff of treasure and collect some around 950ft. Otherwise, I might consider getting song of Este.

Getting sources of Quickness would be helpful too.

So, killing Morgoth isn't quite as easy as my other attempt made it seem. The Longsword wasn't enough to take down his health, even with Song of Sharpness, and he started hitting really hard when I switched to the Greatsword (I only managed to get him down maybe one star).

The frost brand seems rather expensive considering how little use I got out of it. It seems like too many things at that depth resist cold, and the things that don't I wasn't really having trouble killing anyway, except Morgoth.

In retrospect I should have done something about stunning resistance in addition to fear resistance.

On 29.10.2012 19:06 half wrote:
Actually, very few creatures resist elements in Sil (only those where it would seem very odd for them not to resist it). Only 6 monsters below 800 ft resist cold, so I assume you were actually getting a lot of use from it, upgrading a longsword to do greatsword damage against 80% of creatures.

On 29.10.2012 19:28 jdh@people.homeip.net wrote:
The problem, the reason I said it was little use, is that the character died just over 1,000 turns after I made the sword, fighting Morgoth for a good chunk of that time. If I had managed to forge it earlier, I imagine it would have been quite useful, as you say. If I had taken a Silmaril and run it should also have been fairly useful -- but perhaps not as much as sharpness.

As it is, I seem to get better equipment more reliably by exploring the dungeon for random finds than by trying to forge it. Somehow Psi comes away with awesome equipment all the time, but personally I have more fun when I'm not trying a strategy that involves fighting against the clock to find enough forges to build a smithing kit and make something fun.
