You have always loved Luthien, and when you heard Thingol agree that
Beren could marry her if he brought back a Silmaril, you saw your
chance: you'd just have to go and get two.

Went a tried-and-true route, and this is much more survivable. Helps that I found such good gear, too, especially all the slays.

I would like to try taking polearm mastery, blocking, and focused attack. Idea would be to turtle until surrounded, then flip on elbereth and wack everything with opportunist. That would limit me to 1-handed spears, though. I wonder what the odds of me finding Aeglos are :D

Oh, and I was in the middle of patiently whittling down Uldor at 450' when 4 (!) giants barged in on my party. I've never seen that many at once before. I fled the level :)

I've had to flee from every unique thus far because Sulrauko were giving me headaches, or their packs were mixed in with other nasty things (what's with all the giants?!)

I got Gilim to 1/2 health while camping on the stairs, but he gave no fucks about Elbereth and brought me down to 13 HP in one hit, so I decided to bail.

Just got Lore Master, and this is usually the XP sink that kills me. I might stay around 500' and grind a few more levels, there are lots of baddies I haven't killed yet.

Looks good.

With my character I had Gilim on the run but foolishly let him get to some stairs ...

I've tried Polearm Mastery with Focused Attack, Controlled Retreat and Knockback before now. It's pretty fun (but there's a bug so that Knockback won't trigger from your Polearm Mastery attack).

If you encounter Nan, he's more dangerous now. Dude has good hit accuracy for a Giant.

I've honestly only ever seen Nan two or three times. All you people who find Glend all the time :)

Don't have much time to play at the moment... might barely run this character through to its fate by the time it wraps up.

Been grinding 500'-600' for the last little while, and I feel a lot stronger now. Never had so much trouble with nether worm masses in my life, though.

Also, the weight limit is becoming a big problem. I sort of want to carry around the Mattock of Belegost for digging convenience, but it's SO damn heavy :(

On 19.10.2012 01:28 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
With an 18lb Mattock, you're going to need a strength of maybe 4 to fully utilize it. Otherwise, due to its weight and low STR, you're limited to digging rubble.

On 19.10.2012 03:56 debo wrote:
Welp, that was the most obnoxious game of Sil I've played in a while.

I tried an experiment where I took Polearm + used spear of vanyar as my main, and it worked OK, but I still couldn't really hit much. I survived many times by using a variety of tactics, which was really interesting! I survived by the skin of my teeth several times (when I thought I was surely dead), before I finally got surrounded by an Ancient serpent and Vallach. I really started to get bored near the end, though.

Re: the Vallach fight, I was slowly shepherding my way out of some curvy tunnels with Elbereth, and the serpent was actually doing quite a good job of damaging Vallach for me :) After a certain point, though, I ran out of healing and I guess I was hurt badly enough that Vallach wasn't scared anymore. The only thing I didn't try was !Quickness, which in retrospect may have saved me. I was using all my turns trying to duck around the two of them, though.

If anything, this is going to make playing Noldor with actual dex seem like a breeze :) Song was fun to play with, but I found that songs are a lot like regular expressions. Say you get surrounded by cats. OK, you think, I will use the Mastery song and kill them. Now you have two problems; cats that are frozen still (cool), and the pack of greater werewolves and serpents you just alerted with the noise you're making. So now what do you do? My answer was "run like a bitch", most of the time. And thus I never really get a chance to kill much. I was driven off of 700' several times, which was getting really annoying.

It's a bummer that I never managed to get Focused Attack, because that would have gone well with my high perception + elbereth + opportunist + setting spears. Still, my main problem was that I was running into a lot of stuff that simply wasn't scared of Elbereth anymore. Serpents are a right pain in the ass.

If I did this again, I would at the very least haven taken Sharpness before Mastery. It would have been more generally useful at 700'+ range. I'm disappointed that enemies conquered by Mastery still get their evade roll, it really takes the oomph out of that skill. It also seems nonsensical, given the description of the ability.

Good game, and congrats to all the people who are actually good at Sil who did well in the competition :) I can't see myself giving this another go before the contest ends, but it was fun while it lasted!!

On 19.10.2012 03:59 debo wrote:
For the record, my favorite part of this contest is that I tried some weird new thing with every attempt -- I went out of my way to take abilities that I normally rate as "subpar", like throwing mastery and polearm mastery. It seemed fitting, given the unusual build of the character we were given :) Thanks for organizing Scatha, half, and Nick, and everyone else involved!!

On 19.10.2012 04:03 debo wrote:
PS whoever thought of using haunted dreams as a way of dealing with the early invisibles was genius/sadistic. If you spend too much time fighting e.g. a sulrauko with one on, you generate shadows which, you guessed it... are themselves invisible :D My only qualm with them is that I often forgot I was wearing it. It might be nice to have an occasional prompt like "you hear the distant of a spirit waking" or whatever, just to remind you that you're wearing it. I'd even be happy to contribute that patch lol

On 19.10.2012 06:31 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Shadows are critical resistance. To dispatch them more easily, use a Greatsword or some weapon of Final Rest.
