You have always loved Luthien, and when you heard Thingol agree that
Beren could marry her if he brought back a Silmaril, you saw your
chance: you'd just have to go and get two.

This is easily the best attempt I've been able to make, and I don't think it's close. At this number of turns, clouded was getting the Sils!

That really was an awesome performance. I have been generally impressed with archery so far - although I think that it needs more stealth in my mix, probably; I've been diving as close to suicidally as I could manage in a vain attempt to be fast enough.

Lots of kit gaps, too: not even a lantern for light, for example; no way to cut armour so I have pumped song (which makes Elbereth *very* effective!) to get to Sharpness, prepping for the endgame.

On 12.10.2012 02:32 ewan wrote:
So I guess I'll try to hurtle down more and maybe just rely on Elbereth for the throne room?? That seems kinda suicide in itself. but pumping stealth high enough (and presumably getting Vanish) seems a long way off. Dunno, maybe that will work. I expect to die en route, though - darkness is a huge huge issue, among many others!

On 12.10.2012 12:31 Scatha wrote:
Singing Trees will give you an extra 3 light radius; it seems like that should help a lot against darkness ... is the issue that you want to be singing other things?

On 12.10.2012 14:17 ewan wrote:
Oh. Duh. No, just that I didn't know it would be that effective.

On 12.10.2012 18:41 ewan wrote:
Clouded's performance is ever-more impressive to me. I think things are really going well, but there's just *no* way I can get to that turncount. Many kudos, clouded.

Otherwise things are mostly OK. Stealth and archery are getting to the point where they work. Ammo is a constant worry, but otherwise not feeling too bad right now..

On 12.10.2012 18:42 ewan wrote:
Also, looking at the xp I am guessing that clouded was getting Sils way beore this stage. Which is very impressive also.

On 12.10.2012 18:46 Scatha wrote:
It's one to your light radius for every 5 points of Song; obviously it won't always be useful but it's meant to be good when you need it.

On 13.10.2012 20:07 ewan wrote:
So here's the thing: I felt like this was frantic, close to death almost all the way until the end (the ascent was easy, really; somewhere around the first third of the throne room I started getting confident and really getting the archery criticals reliably almost every time). And I'm still **five thousand** turns behind clouded - that really is an *awesome* winning character up there!

Still, not unhappy with my first archer winner. I think that I probably got the balance of as little melee as possible about right; the unique arrow was a HUGE HUGE game-winner both for the big hits and because it didn't break ever. And Song was both versatile and useful, as I guess it should be.

The ascent is a lot easier without the 3rd Sil, I guess; it didn't feel as frantic as I remember. One time a group of Balrogs came up the stairs as I approached, but they just walked right past me :).

Fun comp; Daeron VII is more like Daeron XI or so because I didn't always remember to rename. Thanks again for Sil.

On 13.10.2012 20:09 ewan wrote:
OK, 3500 turns. But still - a LONG time, and that was *with* me having a really, really quick trip up (<2k turns, with all the Revelations and Charging I had).

Also, oops: I didn't notice the helm of Curufin, and I think it would have been useful. O well :(.

On 13.10.2012 20:11 ewan wrote:
Scatha: I did use Trees, and it *was* useful. Elbereth a lot earlyish, really good for making enemies flee for a moment so I could shoot them. Sharpness for tough enemies, and in prep for the endgame where I turned out not to need it. And Silence the whole last third of the game :).

On 13.10.2012 20:33 clouded wrote:
Nice going! This is a super fast win for a non-pacifist char. It's the second fastest non-pacifist win that I can see (Psi's overall highscore is only 2k turns faster). The main reason I was able to get my win in such time is because pacifists don't require that much experience (only around 40k), and don't have to spend turns fighting.

On 13.10.2012 20:42 ewan wrote:
Thanks! I meant to ask (and I'll cross-post the Q on your char): is there a 'pacifist' setting that I have missed, somewhere? I remember you posting about the crown being on the ground without needing to be knocked off, and I was confused :).

On 13.10.2012 20:59 clouded wrote:
Song of Lorien is one of the options to get the crown, put the big guy to sleep and crown slips right off. You need about 20 song to do it if he's unwary, which is fairly easily attainable with a potion of grace and moderate song.

On 13.10.2012 22:42 Scatha wrote:
Staves of Slumber can do the same. It needs the charges, and you have to devote turns to it, but it uses Will instead of Song (may be good depending on the character), they don't get the same bonus to their roll (I think!), and Channelling can potentially give you a big boost.

Great character, by the way. Impressively fast for a non-pacifist non-Noldo!

On 13.10.2012 22:49 ewan wrote:
Ooooooh. OK, I really like that option. Don't really have time to do the comp again, damnit..

On 13.10.2012 22:49 ewan wrote:
Still, not going to knock Psi off the top of the ladder that way. Don't have a plan for that yet :-).

On 14.10.2012 01:03 Psi wrote:
Good :) I'd hate to have to come up with a plan to counter your plan.

Congrats on this char btw!
