More early game testing, this time with a gnome mage.

The early fear code is brutal on my little gnome as take one got insta-killed by a single touch from a Novice Warrior. With low hp, the damage fear checks are pretty much guaranteed on any hit, and with low charisma/level, death is fairly assured. At least 50% likely, I think. I might need to boost the low end of the Charisma fear table.

Gnome Mage take two survived a bit longer. I dive in Camelot right away, clear full sized L1, and jump to full sized L3. With Detect Monsters, I figure I can evade, and this time the town stocked ?Teleport. Clearing L3 is usually good for CL8 or more, which is usually enough fear power to have a chance at surviving the Thieve's Hideout.

I'm on the Wargs now, beginning to feel optimistic as my early Int boosts have gone well. Con is up next: Can I go two for two?

Restart. I was ashamed of farming undead masses in the Sewer all the way up to L24. So I made a change to that quest ...

[CL15:DL8] 00:50
This time I was able to handle the dreaded Novice Warrior insta-fear-death at L5, but not without getting my charisma drained. Sad, but a mage *must* start with max Str/Int/Con. Leaving just 12 in each of Dex and Chr and letting Wis (the new dump stat) do what it must.

After a trip to DL2, I bought a shovel and dug out a copy of Nature Mastery. En route, I ran into Farmer who dropped a +4 digger (Mace of Earthquakes) so I dug a bit more. But without Treasure Detection, this was a bit annoying so I didn't do too much. Just enough to get some Teleport, some CCW and a copy of Chaos Mastery.

Thieves were easy by the time I got to them, and even the Wargs weren't too bad. Diving down to DL8 in Camelot I got a good level feeling, but never figured out what it was. My pack was full and I had to leave behind a dozen or so unidentified objects. And this after reading all 10 of my identify scrolls. Yuk. I hate the early junk barrage!

I'll wait a bit before The Sewer (hint hint). With this lucky wand of fire balls, I might be OK. Crocodiles don't resist fire, right? But I really want my Chaos Bolt first.

No sweat ... Just a couple fireballs were all that was needed. The Croc got a chaos bolt, but it didn't do the polymorph. Still, a confused crocodile is a quick kill! Chaos Bolt is pretty darn powerful early on as not too many early uniques resist confusion.

Now, back to Camelot I guess. My next major obstacles are FA, RConf, and RBlindness.

Oh wait, Gnomes have FA :)

[CL27:Giants L20] 02:34
Onto the giants! Hey, at least this guy can see them coming :)

First trip down had a big vault stuffed with giant ogres and Grendel in the middle. Also inside were 4 other giants and various assorted monsters, probably 200 in all. (It was a wide open random vault room). So, I spent 30 minutes or so leading things out and killing one at a time. Typical mage tactics. Grendel got confused and I was almost out of mana when 8 or 9 other monsters joined the fray. So I fell back on my dragon frost to kill Grendel and my Disintegrate to mop up (away from the loot of course). These early uber wands are quite powerful, as my spells currently are in the 50 to 65 range (Fireball for 85 is just starting to be castable, but that's hardly overpowering). The big reward was a !Int and this nifty helm of Infravision. Rock On!!

[CL33:Giants L30] 03:49
I'm getting my Con On! (Int too :). Thanks to that, my hp are nice and I even managed to recover from the loss of those early extra first level hp. Don't worry, I playtested a couple hobbit mages and had no problems getting up to L6, though it requires a bit of care. Actually, with the early fear code, I don't think having less hp in the early going matters much for a mage as you definitely don't want to get hit in melee anyway. Especially not by a Novice Warrior or a stray puppy.

I started to skim the top of the Anti-melee caves and had a change of heart. Returning to the Giant's Hall, I received 2 special items and 2 potions of charisma in short order, so the RNG approves my decision.

Can I ask: Do people dislike the early game? If so why? Any ideas on making the early game more fun?

The early game is pretty fast for me. I usually manage to finish Barrow Downs by the 1:30 mark. This applies both for melee types and archers. With mages, I generally tend to pick Apollo for early game offense, so maybe I'm not the best person to survey. Maybe that means I should try a mage?

I generally like the pace of the current game--with the Tengu and Mimic quest swapped, there's not really a fixed stumbling block for me anymore.

The game tends to get dangerous and interesting after CL 25. I do agree that removing the ability to scum the Hoard and the Bat would probably be good for the game in the long run, though in the short term, I'll need to figure out a new way of getting through the mid levels.

Fundamentally if you want the players to spend longer on the early game, then probably Barrow Downs needs a bit of a makeover. Currently, the main hesitation for me to charge straight into that quest is because Sting is pretty useful, but for classes where that's not true, it's all to easy to go in there and level from CL 15 to 25.

Con = Off. Ah well, its much more important to be able to cast my spells at this point. Too bad I can't work in a wizardstaff, but defenders are like super glue. I just can't seem to take 'em off!

I now have all 4 Chaos books, but am still missing all of the high nature books. The third book would be especially nice about now but I can wait a bit longer at this depth.

No Storm giant kills yet, and Rich the Thief proved well beyond my capabilities to kill ... But that was before my Rocket. Still, he seems to teleport away 1 in 1 and regens to full before I can find him again. I really need more speed, I guess.
