Is there any reason not to use a shield? Remember that with armor, every additional 1dx adds one to your minimum and average protection, while adding to x gives no extra minimum protection and only 0.5 per point, so things to consider for your next attempt would be [+0,1d5] Leather armor, giving more evasion.
Overall, you should think about what to specialise on in a build. Some builds are tanks, valuing high protection, some prefer evasion and some just plain melee. Then there is stealth, song, focused attack + blocking, Taking Flanking and dancing around, perhaps getting Riposte hits and maybe Zone of Control. This type of build doesn't seem to have a solution for high protection monsters, or for hard hitters, as you have passable evasion and 7.5 average protection, against monsters who do 20 or so damage. That's around 6 rounds of life, counting misses.
