Time Lords are tough to start. If you've only played normal Angband so far, I'd recommend starting with Ranger, one of the all-around best classes. You might also want to take a look at Demigod spoilers... they level slowly but have really nifty special abilities.

(Note that Rangers are WIS-based on Chengband, unlike Angband but like D&D.)
