This is actually try #3, my first two attempts fell to nasty software bugs (Hey not my fault! Or maybe it is?). Anyhow, I think I squished those bugs at last so that my snotling now stands a chance. Recoil fear is the main problem with this build, and I'm just dying (literally) for the shop to stock some Phase Door so I have a chance. I was puzzled by my low shoot through fear odds (<5%) until I remembered the snotling doubling. So I shoot, recoil sends me into a wall, I pass the 25% wounded threshold, fail my fear save (of course), pick up 25 points of fear, try to shoot but face a 25*2*3 = 150 level saving throw! That ain't gonna happen, but at least the game is no longer charging me 8888 energy for a failure. (Sorry Dave, you better not shoot with your snotling until I upload a fix!)

But otherwise, I'm feeling pretty powerful. Given the right setup, and monsters like the dreaded White Crocodile are a snap. With my 2.75x shots per round I can easily fly away using the snotling jet propulsion powers. I doubt even Jack could keep up with me! Of course, there's always a nearby wall to spoil my fun ...

Hagen and Werewindle, Merry as well. So speed is covered. And I finally managed to swap my super heavy 38lb resistance plate mail for a lighter version with poison as well (though about 30 less AC). My favorite snotling combos are:

[2] Recoil=>Set Off Trap=>Helpless

Arguably, the second is avoidable but sometimes I'm shooting too darn fast. And of course, there is

[3] Recoil (x10)=>Low HP=>Fear=>Helpless

That one actually happens quite a bit.

I still can't handle King Koopa, Botei-Building, Queen Ant, etc. Basically, the L38 or so uniques are just too much. Perhaps I should change my name to Snot Gonna Happen? :)

Is fear really that tough for you? I mean, I don't see !oBoldness, which I assume you would have if that really is a problem. My various characters have only occasionally noticed the fear, but that might be because they all have RFear or Berserk already?

(Or, in the case of the Apollo Clubmaster, Fear doesn't seem to affect the use of Racial abilities. Maybe that should change? I'd put those in the same category as "casting a spell")

Ah, well I've improved a bit since my last update. Sniper gloves (For 4k? Sorry, I bumped the price up to 24k ...) and a Crown of Might. I've even managed the GHMMWQ but alas, those gloves won't help an archer.

I have the resources to deal with fear at home, but am stockpiling and simply fleeing when in trouble. Currently, I can handle most monsters at this depth, major exceptions being Botei-Building, Cyclops/Biclops or anything that summons (especially that nasty ant!).

The main issue is that normally an archer can plant 6 squares off a target and loose 20+ shots before the monster closes in. But for the snotling, 4 to 6 shots backs me up against a wall and then I start taking 40 or so damage per round. I found my second excellent shooter all game (first was a crossbow ... perhaps I should have kept it?) I wasn't sure the sling would be wise until I remembered my hitherto unused ability of Create Shots. Now I have plenty of mithril ... as much as I have patience (and gold) to make in fact. Power is getting better though I still need to watch out for many foes at this depth. Probably I should go get that -Detection, lack of chaos resistance be damned. Its about time for Jack to start showing up.

At first I thought my intrinsic Con was good, but it became obvious that is was only 18/100 max and Str was only 18/70. These are the key archer stats so I blindly drank a !NewLife (no !SelfKnowledge sightings yet). I was closing in on L40 and wanted more hp. Apparently, my strategy paid off.

Man I hate Night mares! They have a nasty habit of wandering into my telepathic radius while I'm fighting something else. If they are smart, they jiggle back and forth, dancing in and out of my horrific sight just to spam the terror. Flora is nice, but it takes 7-10 actions to recharge at my current piddly +5 speed (and that will only get worse later in the game). Grrrr. I don't have much incentive for the Cloning Pits, but sooner or later I should go and get Bard (assuming it is Bard!). I don't think a Snotling is the ideal choice to go for first Archer slingmaster honors! But I have this scary thought that I'm not powerful enough for the Old Castle just yet.

I am *way* beyond my comfort zone. At least given my no healing playstyle and I've already had to abandon my no mushroom style and promptly began to decimate my stash. To preserve, I'm using a _Speed instead and that seems to be enough.

At this point we are talking Greater Titans, Lesser Black Reavers, Baphomets, Iron Liches, Death Beasts, etc. etc. I can handle *none* of those. I can do Storm Wyrms (thanks to Colluin) but that still can prove risky. Geez, I'm almost out of levels to gain so let's hope I find a reasonable shooter soon. 30+ shots to kill a Storm Wyrm equals about 250hp of recoil damage and they might breathe too!

At last, I braved the pits, and it was a struggle. Finally I removed Hagen and meleed for the first time all game, to quite an effect. My nominal damage output was 50% my shooting damage output, but the reality is that in the face of queen ant summoners, and considering the snotling propulsion, this was strategically necessary.

The big take was Ballista, which totally blows away any other possible crossbow. In fact, it is ridiculously powerful. Enough to make me overlook the low shooting speed and go for the bolt archer once again. Consider that mithril shots are 128 dam a piece while I have bolts good for up to 400! With snotling propulsion, quality trumps quantity ...

Here are some observations:
[1] Create Ammo does *not* consider the dungeon level. Rather, it only considers player level, so you might as well do it in town.

[2] Steel bolts are not possible since there are 2 objects with tval 18 and sval 1. Regular bolts and steel bolts. The code to lookup an object by tval/sval seeks the first one, so you always get regular bolts.

Probably, I should do something with Create Ammo as it is an exercise in tedium. I just spent an hour creating bolts from the skeletons that took 10+ hours to accumulate.

One final observation:
Check out that amazing skeleton in the Museum!! Not that is truly unique :D

What the heck happened to my power level. Not long ago I was shooting for 128 per shot, 500 total. Now I am annihilating all that stand in my path (330/866). Double Resistance from Colluin and Speed/Stoneskin/Heroism/Stats from my ever ready magic mushroom make for a fierce combo. Heck, I even braved Dworkin sans shards resistance, which was foolhardy in the extreme. But the gamble paid off. With this amazing jewel, I am finally tempted to leave the Arena. Well, I wasn't planning on conquering it anyway ...
