Massively fun character inspired the recent mastery dumps on the ladder. This follows a whole succession of failed, forgeless smiths.

Off-hand is pretty much redundant, so I need to decide whether to go dual wield or subtlety route. I suspect the former is the way to go.

If I don't find Anglachel or Anguirel then I am going to need Song of Sharpness if I am going for V. However songs are getting very expensive and I also need woven themes.

I also think the grace of point from the perception tree will be worth the cost.

Other than Angrist (slayer of Grotesques and serpents), loot has been very poor. No stat items or even useful staves yet. Progress has been surprisingly steady despite this.

Cool, glad you're having fun. I enjoy Mastery a lot. Let us know how you get on with it.

I can well believe the point of Grace in the Perception tree will be worth it. If you end up going for Sharpness it could be cheaper than the point of Grace in Song. Will you be taking Woven Themes in any case?

Each extra point of Song is very valuable when you're using Mastery to protect yourself, too.

On 15.9.2012 13:53 Psi wrote:
I will be taking woven themes regardless, but I have already taken grace from the song tree.

Other thing I am thinking about is whirlwind attack which could be fun with mastery. Elbereth and opportunist have been working very well together so far.

On 16.9.2012 09:49 Psi wrote:
Well I've got Anglachel so maybe I don't need sharpness. However damage output is not high enough to trouble V, so still some work to do there.

On 16.9.2012 12:14 Psi wrote:
I wonder if Angrist as the off-hand weapon might actually be more effective than the grace boost from Dagmor?

On 16.9.2012 12:19 Psi wrote:
I'm also standing on Hurin. Now it is only 3d5, not sure it is worth picking up.

On 16.9.2012 14:57 Scatha wrote:
Angrist would probably be a better damage source than Dagmor (and slightly better than just using Anglachel two-handed? But of course one-handed you can benefit from Strength potions). As to whether that's more effective, it depends on what's causing you trouble.

On 17.9.2012 08:45 Psi wrote:
No trouble as such - only Vallach has managed a few attacks through mastery. At the moment the additional voice is better than using Angrist.

On 17.9.2012 10:26 Psi wrote:
Really strange position. Sitting on a small pile of XP, but I have already put 20 points in both melee and song. This tends to be my skill cap until the throne room (when I would usually throw excess points into melee and evasion).

I'm guessing I will want 20 evasion and whirlwind attack for the throne room, but at the moment nothing is too threatening. Famous last words. I could do with finding some of the unique vaults, so my danger isn't too costly in the throne room.

On 17.9.2012 12:10 Psi wrote:
This is me in my grace gear. Not sure if that will be best for the throneroom as it leaves me somewhat open to the elements and stunning/confusion and with reduced evasion.

How much song do I need to get what level of mastery over V? It is tempting to throw all my XP into song, but still wondering if SoSharpness may be needed?

On 17.9.2012 13:18 Psi wrote:
Decided the best root was probably rapid attack and Song of Slaying... and man was that fun.

I entered the level and started singing mastery with slaying as a minor theme. Once V was close by I buffed up and killed anything near, getting my slaying bonus up to +36. I then went toe-to-toe with him. Not sure if he got a move - he certainly didn't hit me. I had kept a pool of XP incase I needed to take sharpness, but it wasn't required.

On 17.9.2012 13:42 Scatha wrote:
Congratulations!

I think after the crown is off Song 30/31 will be enough to make V miss half his turns when he's adjacent, and it just gets better from there, with 36 or so getting him down to one tun in 8 and Song 40 not giving him any turns.

That Slaying bonus sounds awesome, and a lot of fun. How far had it decayed by the time you killed Morgoth?

On 17.9.2012 14:03 Psi wrote:
Not sure how far it had decayed. Probably below 20. However I just reached +45 at the gates! I couldn't get off the far side quick enough to preserve all but a smattering in the dump though...

This build makes the mid-to-end game somewhat trivial - though I didn't notice my voice running out when fighting two unrelenting horrors and a troll guard at once in the throne room. Would have been embarassing if they killed me...

Then you surely have reached the highest melee bonus ever? I'm prattling on about this, I realize, but I find crazy stuff like this interesting. +45 +native melee would be what, around +73 x3 attacks or so?! That's a lot of guaranteed criticals!
