This character is why archery rules...Using an idea I picked up from debo's video I didn't put any points in to melee. Normally I don't have a real concrete plan when I play SIl I like to be more organic with it. Meaning that I tend to work with what I can find, whereas debo or most other guys will just dump a character if the character can't find or do things by a certain point. See, normally I would put points into melee so that I can use Charge! which is still really useful and something that is worth the points having. But since I was focused on having a wealth archer to kill Morgoth with I didn't get charge. Nor did I get smithing...for whatever dumb reason I had. I did manage to find a bow after bouncing from 350ft to 400 ft. I had a lot of real close calls, but with sprinting...which I always get btw, I was able to run.
Since Vanish has been nerfed I instead got the extra Dex point first. As you can notice by my turn count I pretty much went very fast to the bottom. I could have gone faster actually ...but I wanted to have enough( well more than enough) Dex!,Str! and Con!
When I got to the throne room I got a bit unlucky at first when I hit an alarm trap dispite having invested in perception quite a bit. But it actually worked out well since the secret chamber behind Morgoth gave me a place where I could shoot Morgoth and no one else could even see me. But after I did Morgoth up, Gothmog and wolf Sauron gave chase. Yeah they went down pretty easy to especially since I kept crippling them and the potion of quickness was enough to keep Wolf Sauron from ripping me to shreds.
I should note that Ungoliant almost killed me in her lair. I forgot that I had a shadow cloak on so I got caught inbetween her and her brood without light to see by and despite having poison resistance( which is NEVER a waste IMO) I was getting poisoned each round. SO I stopped and looked at my equipment and thought" what can save me here"? It looked like nothing since I was already wearing a crown of brilliance. But I did have a stave of Foes. And that pointed out Ungoliant's location and I was able to X away...and shoot her to death. I'm prouder of surviving that tight situation than of killing Morgoth.

BTW I didn't need song of sharpness for Morgoth, I did have a bunch of arrows of Piercing so I might have needed Song of Sharpness, but probably not since Concentration had me hitting him harder each round : )
Can't think of what else to report. I do have a screen shot but it shows the Throne room and I think its cool if you see it for yourself the first time.

I think I did this in 5 or 6 hours btw.

Wow!!!

You definitely beat Sil, v1.1, with class, such you have the 3rd best Sil character on the ladder. Good show!

On 13.9.2012 23:41 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Actually, you DO have the best Sil v1.1 character, as of now!

Thanks...dude I can't even come close to ewan or psi so this is pretty amazing. Those dudes are super human. I played a NPP comp with ewan and I couldn't even get close to him.

Actually in debo's video for stealth archer he also kills Morgoth and he lays it out. So its not that hard to do with this build. However I tend to get more protective stuff than most...and I could have done this with my last character if I had concentration....

On 13.9.2012 23:53 Scatha wrote:
Congratulations!

I think the big difference for taking on V between this and your last character was not Concentration, but the fact that you were using Belthronding rather a shortbow -- that's about five extra damage sides.

On 14.9.2012 00:04 Fendell Orcbane wrote:

You might have a point there. I know that when I saw Belthronding I went for it hardcore. The funny part was that it took so long...or at least it felt like it. He was only able to stumble two steps near me before he died. ...I should have save scummed that character so that I could see how the rolls would work out : ( But I do think that Concentration is a big help.

Good job, Bob! Hey, *you* have my ring of Melian. I really wanted that. I bet it came in handy for all your focused/concentrated shots though, so I'm glad it got good use.

Actually Morgoth was already dead before I picked Melian up. I almost considered dropping it ...buts handy for finding doors and traps. Actually it would have been awesome for 950 and the throne room.

Well done! Glad the videos helped, although your turn count was wayyyy better than mine.

Slight sad-face: Why did Lungorthin change from 'Balrog of White Fire" to "Lord of the Balrogs"? I liked the former name better :)

On 14.9.2012 01:40 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
Yeah thanks. I guess what I really got from the videos was that you don't really have to go any one way with Sil. I mean I would never play the way that you do with low Will, but you were able to make it work out : ) Then again you were surprised that I actually put points into Melee. But there again, different playing styles. I tend to not dump a character if I don't get x items within a certain lvl limit. So if lets say I got a really awesome melee weapon like Ringil, maybe I'd focus on melee...and I've always invested in archery since the first version of Sil. But this is the first time that I was like F melee. Archery is just too good. ANd the best part is that it would be unfair t nerf it : )

On 14.9.2012 09:04 Psi wrote:
Great going!

I'm afraid whatever else happens, you can be pretty sure that archery will get nerfed.

Lungorthin changed name to fit the canon. The name is only mentioned once, in the Lays of Beleriand, when Morgoth has captured Hurin:

I think the "white fire" association was introduced by Angband, and we kept the colour. If most people think it was better, though, we could think of moving back.

We're not sure that archery is too good in general, but it does seem to create a perfect storm against V, so you can expect a tweak on one side or the other of that fight.

Which is fair...I should note that the first few levels were really hard and I had a lot of close calls. Delthaur was chasing me around quite a bit before he finally died. If archery were weaker I don't know if it would be worth getting at all.
Also I set Morgoth up...so its not like you can just get archery and kill Morgoth. Its archery + stealth and experience...although debo's video shows one way to do it.
Gee, remember when beating Sil was special?

I kill 10-20 characters for every one that makes it to the throne room. Even many of those do not survive.

I'd still call it 'special' :)

Yeah, but I remember when no one had won yet. Having said that I should try a melee character. A non stealth melee character. I still don't know how people win without stealth....just thinking about being surrounded by wargs makes me shudder. Or cats.
I think for me what archery does is that it makes Wargs and Cats pretty easy to deal with because you can cripple them and then pick them off. Plus cats usually die with one or two good shots.

Before I got on the wise to archery I'd hope that my stealth would let me avoid Wargs. Or that I could run to the stairs if I got spotted.
