A perception infused warrior. This 3d6/3d8 Hador's axe has been really nice. I can hit hard, while still focusing and blocking with my big shield.

Does Concentration work if you wack an enemy, knock it back, and then wait for it to come up to you again before wacking it again?

On 13.9.2012 09:05 Psi wrote:
@debo - I've read that that is the case.

@HM - nice going and do remember that Calris is effectively 4d12 with the fire brand.

A question - how do you find Greater Werewolves (and Emerald serpents) with a build like this? With low evasion they are always going to hit you and leave you horribly poisoned are they not?

I assume you can survive Kemen because they are always likely to hit (rather than earthquake) and your protection is high enough to absorb the damage? Does protection also absorb earthquake damage actually?

On 13.9.2012 13:29 half wrote:
Yes, passing doesn't break your concentration (also designed to let it work with Blocking, Focused Attack, etc).

Earthquake damage is indeed reduced by armour.

Yes, do think about using Calris. It should do insane amounts of damage, but will lower your prot quite a bit.

On 13.9.2012 14:14 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
I actually had to take poison resistance, which I usually consider a waste of good xp, during my Gothmog fight. I kept seeing 40+ poison damage stacking rather quickly.

Yes, Calris! I went to sleep thinking about Calris. My plan when making this character was to try to kill Morgoth, or die trying, using a heavyish weapon, focus/concentration and knockback. I have something like 22 perception now, which is potentially an extra 22 to melee should I find myself in the situation where I can hit Morgoth and send him back consecutively for 11 rounds. I won't be permahasted like my Weirdo character, and no opportunist to tack on, so it might just be a really good Morgoth yo-yo build, if I can even make it there!

Yeah, the protection loss will be scary, but if I'm to have any chance of winning, I'm going to have to up my accuracy as high as possible. I might even drop all items with accuracy penalties if I can get a good 1v1 setup.

So blasting does work for Silent Watchers. Good to know!

On 13.9.2012 15:48 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Yeah, you've probably seen the umpteen silent watchers in Gothmog's hall. Blasting did close to half damage per blast. All that pipe-smoking has greatly reduced Holmes ability to use the horn repeatedly, but it made killing them much easier.

Okay, this is it, I'm about to drop down to the throne room! But first, I am going to go consult Debo's throne room video... I learned a lot there that I'd like to put into practice. And, with Listen, I should be able to have a much better idea of where to set up shop for the big fight.

Also, my melee+perception totals to 49! That is what Half said you needed for auto-successful-hit, on this random forum thread about interesting and mostly unobtainable 100% failsafe skill checks: http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=5216&page=16. If only I can make it to 49, and am fast enough to do it.

I suppose the extra 1000xp and xp from the throne room will be spent on a hard point of melee. I'm likely to switch back to the axe and shield for the non-Morgy part of the interview.

On 13.9.2012 19:56 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Aww, that was anti-climactic, but not in a good way like with Weirdo. I essentially made a Morgy yo-yo. I achieved the mythical +49 to hit without a hitch and kept blasting Morgoth back to rinse/repeat an absurd number of times. I was getting single criticals every time, and occasional double criticals, but I guess 5d14/6d14 just isn't enough when you waste a whole turn for him to regenerate.

Consolation prize was reaching the +49... I doubt I'm the first to achieve this with people adding stealth scores with assassination or perhaps song of slaying characters. Also, I learned something I had long wondered about... would standing on a glyph of warding keep Morgoth shifting your position with rubble or dropping pits under you? The answer: no.

I'm just going to have to make a character who can 1v1 with no tricks and try to gut Morgy up as quickly as possible! Knockback overabuse is cheesy anyway. But, +49! Morgy yo-yo!

On 14.9.2012 09:35 Psi wrote:
What do you class as no tricks? I've done it taking rapid attack and two weapon-fighting: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=13342

I imagine it would be very tough with just a single blow though.

On 17.9.2012 04:37 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Without even looking at the character, I know which one it is! It is the only one on the ladder I consider a 'no-trick' Morgy killer, though I haven't looked at all the Morgy killers carefully.

I would not put rapid attack + two weapon fighting for three attacks a round in the 'trick' category. I think for me, trick means doing something to Morgoth makes him useless, or severely gimped. Things that amplify your hero I don't think of as tricks,... but, making Morgoth confused and slow and perpetually knocked back are abusive to me... even though I still do them while I can!
