Thought I'd try a melee-ish character. I can't seem to do straight melee without much stealth, but finding a very early Mail Corslet of Protection [-2, 2d5] helped a lot (as opposed to all the times I died when I didn't find armor early enough). I had to blow 3,000 experience on Curse Breaking at 950' because I stupidly equipped a cursed plain old sword instead of sticking with Aeglos, and I really wanted to raid the Cat Fortress which was on that floor instead of going to look for Sanctity (Staff of Treasures said there was none there). It's also trickier using Song of Silence as a substitute for lots of stealth since your voice runs out periodically. I think this is my first win without Vanish. Song of Silence seemed to have almost the same effect when I shut a couple doors on Morgoth (combined with Sprinting).

When it works, Song of Mastery is wonderful (especially woven with Song of Silence and used on cats), but I never could deal with D's except by running away and only managed high-will uniques near the end.

I also managed to kill a few Balrogs this time. I wouldn't have minded getting the whole set, but I wasn't going to stick around 1000' looking for them.

Noted: artifacts found at the gates are reported as being found at 6500' feet. Also, the interface for woven themes is perhaps documented but I expected to be able to stop a minor theme by hitting it again, not by hitting the major theme again.

Nice going, and congratulations.

I guess your character was more Song-based than anything else. Some great equipment finds for that build -- how much did those influence the direction you took the character?

Interesting weaving Mastery with Silence; I haven't tried that. I did find weaving Mastery with Elbereth was very effective, and my main technique for dealing with dragons with my recent character of that build: when they get a go, they use it to try to run away!

There aren't any regular cursed weapons, by the way -- it would have had some bonus as well as the curse.

The Balrog rarities are supposed to be such that you won't meet them all in one game. Were they tough to fight?

It may have been a +1 or 1d8 shortsword, but since it stopped saying special and just said cursed as soon as I put it on, I assume that's all it was, not an ego-weapon or artefact. I was surprised since I had never seen something so plain cursed before in Sil. I was trying to think of any possible way to remove the curse without a staff or taking curse-breaking. It would have been nice if some Song did, but that might have made it too easy. :)

I found Silence very useful to weave with all sorts of things to keep monsters from noticing my songs (and me, with moderately low stealth). If I understand the description right, it's equivalent to a Stealth bonus of Song/2 (plus quieting other sounds), even though it doesn't show up that way in the character sheet.

Balrogs -- Rauko-bane and Song of Mastery made Vallach much easier, though he still did a significant amount of damage when he managed to move. I feel like Mastery is such a special case, though; there is no other way (that I know of) to get so many free moves, not even with Stun or Crippling Shot (although I assume those would have helped against Vallach's speed), and it only works when your Song is very high. The other two were easy with Mastery, but I have no other experience with them to compare to.

About the character development, I was ambivalent. When I started I had in mind focusing on melee and evasion, then pumping up stealth and seeing what I could do with Assassination, which I haven't used much since I first tried the game and found it got me in trouble. Melee and Evasion were working so well (if you ignore the number of deaths it took me to get lucky and find great early armor) that I started putting points into Will instead (I took Critical Resistance when I ran into cats and Poison Resistance when I ran into a werewolf), and then decided to go for Song of Mastery after seeing what you had done with it. The equipment certainly helped, but I wouldn't say I made decisions because of it until near the end (taking e.g. Woven Themes instead of investing in things other than Song).

Running out of Voice was a frequent problem with this character since half of my stealth came from Song of Silence. I'm sure Majesty helped with that, making things run away when they did notice me.

I haven't done much with Song of Slaying, Song of Staying or Song of Este; those may be good to try in future characters.

Overall I'd say I came closer to dying many more times with this character than with stealth and archery. I had to use quite a few healing items after running into dragons, vampires, cats. Song of Mastery helps to make them less scary (especially cats), but not as much as archery. Hacking through armor was also a problem, especially with grotesques, since I found nothing (that I recall) with sharpness and couldn't afford Song of Sharpness. I still have no idea how to do straight melee, without tricks; it seems you have to fight everything in the dungeon then. :)

I suspect your cursed weapon was vampiric. I think the only other cursed weapon type is 'of fury' but they id on wield due to the 'whirlwind attack' ability.

Fighting everything in the dungeon sounds about right for non-stealth builds. Nether worms and Kemenraukers are my pet hate for those sort of characters.
