To be honest I wasn't expecting to get very far (I've not had a pacifist make it past about 600' before), but it's been going smoothly, and while I'd have liked to have found more in the way of Stealth gear I've really just lucked out for a bow (found in a chest)! I still suspect it will turn out badly, but for now I will creep on!
On 10.9.2012 00:37 Scatha wrote: Had a couple of close encounters: one with Werewolves (after I forgot to check a chest for traps before opening it it nearly killed me from the flame trap! Then waiting to heal some Werewolves decided to hang out in the room. One of them bumped me, and while running I was twice lethally poisoned. Circled round and made it to the stairs.), and one with Cat Warriors. Decided after that to spend as little time as possible at Cat Warrior depth. The deep levels have been mostly okay. Spotted a couple of times by Vampires, but nothing too dangerous, except for one moment of stupid I record in the notes.
So, I'm standing on the stairs to the Throne Room. Unless anyone has any particular suggestions of things I need, I'm going to go down when I pick up the game. (I'd like a _Revelations, but no luck so far.) I feel the character should have enough to take out Morgoth, though that might require a better player than me. I'm less certain about the escape ...

I guess you don't want to grind at 900-950 feet for fear of dying, but your stealth is disgustingly high -- if that's not enough to make you un-spottable by cats, I don't know if I want to play stealth characters anymore :)
Are you going to take Song of Sharpness?
I would just shimmy down the secret passage to the tunnel behind Morgoth's throne, buff up, and open fire. :) 2 pots of voice should be more than enough, provided you kill Morgy on your first attempt.

On 10.9.2012 11:23 Scatha wrote: Nothing spots me unless it bumps into me -- but cats come in groups, move fast and somewhat erratically, which makes them a nightmare. They are also high stealth which means I don't hear them from as far away as I'd like to be really paranoid about getting out of their way.
I should say that a lot of the ideas for this character came from watching your archer videos: thanks! You were killing quite a lot less than I expected, which made me wonder if the pacifist build was possible. I was planning on using that same secret passage strategy (but perhaps on exploring the level first, for experience and perhaps items). Note that with my longsword the big four should all show up. Of them it's Gorthaur I'm most worried about, followed by Glaurung. They can both entrance, which could be really bad. Gorthaur also moves fast and has the highest Perception in the game apart from Carcharoth.
I'm planning on picking up Concentration, Finesse, Crippling Shot and Rapid Shot. Apart from that, just push Archery up. (I have enough Stealth; more points in Perception or Will might help but probably don't matter; Exchange Places is the only other thing that occurs to me.)
I won't take Song of Sharpness because I'm here for Morgoth alone, and I don't want my arrows going through him and taking out anyone else by mistake. (I have bumped into people a couple of times in the game by mistake, but killed nothing.)
The very high Stealth makes Vanish very good, by the way.
On 10.9.2012 11:52 half wrote: Great work! I think that only 2 of the 4 will show up, but let us know which way it works afterwards. I think a big challenge will be in not killing anything else. Is there a good way to kite Morgoth towards you? Throwing a potion of quickness at him might actually be smart, to get him away from the pack: then slow him in the long corridor and get some distance. Probably not, since having him at speed 1 is so useful. You are getting Crippling Shot right?
I'd prepare the ground though, with some well placed warding runes. I'd also consider using Earthquakes if you need to escape.
On 10.9.2012 11:56 half wrote: Ah, I see, you are taking it.
Even without sharpness you might have an arrow miss him and kill someone else. Seems unlikely though, as it will have (+0) against them. Sharpness could be useful if you lure him to the long corridor without others present. Careful use of earthquakes and the mattock could guarantee you a long piste with just you and him locked in, I think. Maybe even the ability to circle around...
Is Vanish better than in 1.0.2 with that Stealth?
On 10.9.2012 12:00 Scatha wrote: Yes, I was planning to use Warding Runes, although I'm a bit worried they won't help at all against him since his Will is so high. What I can't remember is whether he uses a turn to break the rune or also gets to move onto the space where it was.
Potion of quickness would be pretty funny! I think I might be okay in that I'm not sure he'll shout to alert others. I might have to turn Vanish off for a bit if trying to persuade him to follow me around corners.
On 10.9.2012 13:43 debo wrote: I've used _Warding against Morgoth before. I've never seen him fail to smash one on his first try, and if he gets a Will _boost_ in 1.1 after losing his crown, I imagine it will be even worse for you :) I believe he moves onto the square in the same turn that he breaks the rune.
I didn't realize you could throw potions for effect in Sil... maybe I'll start keeping some !Conf and !Slow around after all!
I'm curious to see what your damage output is like without Sharpness... good luck with it!

On 10.9.2012 19:30 Scatha wrote: So close!
I very nearly pulled it off, and I think I could have done. I liked the idea of playing it safe by closing off a tunnel for my duel with V, but unfortunately in doing this I accidentally killed a Hithrauko and an Easterling Spy with the Staff of Earthquakes.
Everything else went fairly smoothly. My archery (2x(+28,1d16), I think, with a double brand) was more than up to the job. I only took one Silmaril, for several reasons:
- Wasn't sure I could get through the protection on the crown to get more (but with Grond, perhaps I could)
- Very worried about a shattering weapon waking nearby monsters (perhaps I should have got V's attention by throwing something so that I didn't knock the crown off in the centre of things)
- Wasn't sure how I'd deal with the extra monsters on the escape (but perhaps it would have been fine)
It was all smooth sailing until the gates level, where I came across a Roost blocking the only corridor between Iron walls and I thought I was doomed. (Not having the experience to take Exchange Places.) Luckily I remembered that Staves of Freedom can deal with even the kind of traps you can't disarm.
On 10.9.2012 19:41 HallucinationMushroom wrote: lol at missing the crown with Grond. That paints a funny picture in my mind of this super stealth ninja guy, barely lifting Grond and almost breaking his foot. And, you ditched your bow. That is some serious confidence! Good concept character, awesome job.
