Just wanted to show off my new favorite opening -- Feanor 2543 w/ 6 Melee, 4 evasion, 3 stealth, 2 smithing (I think.)

Take Finesse, Disguise, Weaponsmith, and at the first forge make Longsword (2.0lb), Bastard Sword (3.0lb), Mattock (as light as you can).

Then pump melee, evasion, stealth for a while until you feel comfortable switching focus to Perception -> Lore Master.

Finesse is SICK GOOD on its own with the correctly weighted weapons. The Bastard Sword is for more dice when I need it, but it is still light enough that it does well w/ criticals. Otherwise, I use Longsword and a Round Shield, which are common enough in the first few hundred feet.

The switching of slays over to Doriath, Gondolin etc has served to make the odds of doing well against at least a few monster types in the early game. Also, the Warg-wall at 400' isn't what it once was. All my pre-500' deaths have been very stupid thus far, and not because I was encountered with a situation I didn't know how to deal with.

Good stuff w/ 1.1 so far!

Does it seem to you like doriath is really common early? I've been finding it all the time... not really helping Warg's standing this version.

Not incredibly often... I've only played about six 1.1 characters thus far, though. I've found about an even number of Gondolin and Doriath items in the early game, IIRC.

Got Melee, Evasion, and Stealth to 10... now time to focus on Perception -> Lore Master. I'm a bit uncomfortable without Sprinting, but trying to focus on fundamentals.

As usual, taking a break and coming back to a game later got me killed in a hurry. Ran into an Easterling Warrior that I should have seen, and then ended up being sandwiched between the mobs of Othrod AND Ulfang.

I quickly took Elbereth and was doing well, but a bloody terribly placed Sulrauko and a shadow worm mass killed me just 1 square away from stairs. If only I'd known what more of my consumables were, I could have escaped.

Doriath, Gondolin & Defender should be equally common early on, with Final Rest joining them at 350 ft and Nargothrond at 450. We improved these weapon types because we thought the single slays were just a bit to poor to really bother with, and that they made the identification game a bit dull for weapons. We're interested to know if the change has caused any problems so do keep an eye out. One thing it's done is to make it a bit harder to use them to know what's nearby.

Bundling up the Slays onto flavor-types was a fantastic idea, IMO. The only ones I'd hold onto were Orc-slaying and maybe Wolf-slaying before, and I'd ditch those by 600'. Consolidating 2 types onto one weapons makes it way more fun to hang onto swaps!
