What I really want are completely random monsters, but other than
perma-hallucination, which distorts items, this is the best I got.

This sort of odd challenge came about when I was pondering different responses on the forum from people who use monster recall, rods of probing, and outright monster spoiling through edit files and the differing opinions therein. I would be the opposite end of the spectrum, not bothering to ever garner any information other than game display messages, damage feedback, and my own shoddy memory from previous encounters. I think it would be highly interesting to have randomly generated monsters, but as I cannot even code, "Hello World", this is about as good as I can experience that. The problem is, I can deduce pretty quickly what I'm fighting, especially in Sil where the list is so short.

I've pulled this stunt before, with Monster Blind 3, in Vanilla. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=11292 I managed to kill some of the hardest uniques, like the Tarrasque, but fell short... as I often do on my stupid challenges.

When it comes down to it, I'd rather pit my tried and true warrior archetypes against ridiculous hurdles than to explore the myriad of game play options other classes have to offer.

Aw man, I had just killed Lungorthin? too. It was something that could breathe fire and guarded a fair bit of treasure. I had turned the corner power wise... I was really started to melt through everything. Oh well. Same old me, stumbling at the last hurdle.

This is kind of hilarious. I like the fact that what killed you may have been the first time you met something that would be a red 'D' regularly (of course it may not, but I'm allowed to hope).

Would it be better if you had a version of the game where you were permanently hallucinating? We could compile one for you ...

This is crazy. I'm kind of surprised it is even possible. I'm somewhat satisfied that the monsters in Sil are distinct enough that you can determine what they are from their behaviours/abilities. We did work at that, but I'd never thought of testing it like this. Well done!

On 7.9.2012 23:38 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
That would be awesome. I've always wanted to do that, but I never even attempted to learn how to go about making the game do it. The only problem I can foresee with that though, is that the items would be distorted as well... but, I think I can handle that! I might bump into a few more molds than usual but I think I killed all the molds I ran into it in this game anyway.

Ah, thanks. I noticed more things like, monsters roaring, and things going under doors, and attack descriptions like bite and claw and such... I often sort of glaze over when I'm playing but with so little to go on I paid more attention than usual.

Things like group tactics, status affects, group vs individual, likely strength based on special room, etc... I pretty much could tell you with a good bit of certainty when I was fighting cats, or wolves, or pretty much anything after a round or two. I should probably mention I didn't have any other window but the main screen... I didn't consult combat rolls because I never use those anyway.
