Reprising the build of my last character, who seemed strong but died from arrogance and stupidity (somewhat appropriate for a son of Feanor, one feels).

I've been going well if not rushing. I'm now standing at a 4 use forge and have some decisions to make. With my smithing gear on I get up to a score of 29. My staff of treasures also revealed the Cloak of Maglor elsewhere on the level, so I could try to recover that before I begin my work.

Even at this score (and I could perhaps invest a little more), it's not totally clear whether I should make an artefact, or just keep on upgrading everything.

Of non-artefacts, I'm interested in making some of:

Lesser Jewel of Grace
Mithril Helm of Brilliance [+0,1d4]
Mail of Resilience [-3,2d5]
Mithril Shield of Frost [+1,1d7] (or Mithril Shield of Deflection [+3,1d6] at difficulty 30)
Mithril Gauntlets of Strength [+1,1d1]
Feanorian Lamp of True Sight
Amulet of Gra+2 or Con+2 (difficulty 30)
Ring (+4) or [+4] (difficulty 31)

On the other hand my main ideas for artefacts are:

31: Boots (+1)[+1,1d1] Sprinting, Exchange Places
29: Dwarf Mask with +1Con, +1Gra
27: Ring with +Dam, RCold
30: Amulet of +2 Song, Song of Mastery, Woven Themes

Thoughts welcome!

Cool, you've all sorts of awesome gear. Not sure what I'd want for this character, probably I'd like to get melee higher, so I'd go for a sweet ring of acc, then maybe one of the cool artefacts.

Thanks, yes, I'd forgotten just how good Artistry could get. There are a few slots where you can't make good use of super-high Smithing without getting Artifice, but most of them are still good to the high 20s or so (and in some cases much further).

At the moment I'm not having much problem killing things (with a good Song of Sharpness I just need to be able to hit sometimes), but I think you're right that I'll want higher melee for the depths. I may well just spend a few points there, but a good Ring of Accuracy would probably do more for me than the damage ring at the moment. Indeed I might already have been wrong to drop my Ring (+2) in favour of the damage.

I guess making more non-artefacts would probably make me more powerful in the short term, but I can still hope to find a few more forges after this, and use those with 2 or 4 uses for those little incremental improvements.

I realised that I could do better if I made that amulet as a crown instead, but needed a bit more grace for that. Anyhow, have been having fun since and the character feels very powerful now. Just found an amazing armoury (see notes). There's an unidentified staff I've spotted (in another vault), and I'm hoping it's Revelations.

Wow, those weapon finds were crazy. Calris looks kind of awesome now, though cold vuln is a bit scary.

Also, that's a lot of voice.

So far I've felt extremely powerful at the end. I just killed Ancalagon and about ten turns later (enough to clean up the Raukar he was hanging out with) I'm presented with the situation you can see in the attached screenshot.

I'll leave it here for tonight. When I come back to it, I guess I'll find out if I'm as powerful as I think ...

Yes, I've been using Calris a lot. We buffed it at the last minute pre-release (it was 3d6 before), and it's possible that it's a step too far -- but it's a fun weapon, so it's good if it's powerful enough to see use.

The cold vulnerability isn't much of an issue for me because when I weave a song of Mastery and Sharpness the serpents tend to go down without getting to move near me. (That said, I'm switching through various weapons, so I'm not sure I've ever had it out when tangling with an Ancient Sapphire Serpent.)

Thinking of taking two-weapon fighting to use Dagmor and the Blade of Shadows.

What a great character. So many interesting things: your weapon haul, your score of 30 in song, your mithril hoard...

Perhaps you want to forge a cloak of warmth or the like? Then again, simply swapping to a different weapon should be enough (if you remember in time...) Take advantage of Calris. If it is too silly we'll move it back to 3d6, but we might as well find out!

Try to get some estimates of what fraction of the time enemies miss their go when singing Mastery.

Good luck with the Balrog pair!

My Song of Mastery, it turns out, is enough to keep even the Valaraukar (mostly) in their place, and my Voice is high enough to keep it going practically forever (which may be more of a problem).

Had a cute moment where I got the Great Fire Drake to clear out the multiple Gwathraukar who were giving me lighting issues.

Gothmog's Hall has a forge, but it only has two uses. I think I'll explore the rest of the level before I decide what to make.

I am really surprised at the number of players I see who find Saithnar and discard it for something else :/ Are the wraiths really that bad?

I probably would have chosen it over e.g. off-handing Dagmor, although I guess with such a crazy song of sharpness the math works out much better with your strategy :)

On 8.9.2012 11:44 Scatha wrote:
Saithnar's sword is really excellent -- I think it's possible that the wraiths could even be an advantage for the extra experience provided as they're so easy to kill with it (but that's pure speculation, I haven't really played with it since the wraiths were added).

It had too much competition here, though. It couldn't compete with Calris for sheer damage output (and the light radius is good too), and Gaurin's glaive gave me sharpness (as if I needed it) together with tunneling.

As for Dagmor, that's perfect for this character for the Grace bonus. My Song of Mastery is the main thing I want to keep going here.

My plan is to have fun extorting as much as I can from this floor and then a challenge for the throne room and the escape: kill Morgoth but nothing else. I'll see how that goes. (& without going stealthy -- though it's possible I'll need to buy Exchange Places.)

On 8.9.2012 12:57 half wrote:
debo: To give an example of how the grace bonus matters, we think this character may have such a high song score than an adjacent Balrog can *never* get a turn when Mastery is being sung!

Apparently I messed up and failed to save the game last night after defeating Gothmog -- so I got to do the Balrog fight again. Similarly easy this time around. In fact the main difference is that Gothmog never got to attack (whereas he did once last time). No cool trick with the dragon, but the Gwathraukar weren't a problem either.

Oops! My usual death of being overconfident and not paying quite enough attention.

In this case I had Morgoth down to one star, but hadn't stopped to heal because his regeneration was annoyingly fast and he wasn't getting very many turns so I thought . I'd also let my Grace and Constitution potions wear off and had several thousand experience points I could usefully have invested ...

I was on just over half health before he got that attack.

I have a copy of the save from when I moved computers, and I might try that again some time; I'm fairly confident that I could kill everything if I wanted, or pull off the trick of killing just Morgoth. Now there's a challenge: from the start of the game, win while killing _only_ Morgoth.

Wow, 35 song! I guess at 35 you'd have the protection down to what, a little less than a fifth? Nice. Does mastery work pretty well against Morgoth?

Right, almost no protection.

Before Morgoth loses the crown, he would get almost no goes against me when adjacent (and the same is true for every other monster in the game). After the crown drops, he wakes up a bit. He was still down to getting perhaps only one turn in three against my Song 35 Mastery, but if I'd switched gear I could have got my Song a couple higher, and two more if I'd spent my experience; the combination would really have kept him still.

By the way, I had an idea for a challenge game which seemed right up your street: no magic!

- Never use any {special} items, artefacts, jewellery, feanorian lamps, lesser jewels, or shadow cloaks.
- Don't use Staves or Trumpets
- No Songs
- Only Weaponsmith, Armoursmith and Artistry allowed in Smithing
- No Lore Master, Flaming Arrows, or Inner Light

Anyhow, feel free to try it out or to ignore it. I'm not sure, it might just not be very fun to play without the discovery of special items. Also feel free to tweak the rules if you think something there should be allowed or something else shouldn't.

Hmm, I'll give it a shot! Sounds crazy enough, for sure.
