I'm having great fun with zone of control and flanking, quite the contrast to my last character with focused attack/controlled retreat which was all about 1v1 combat. The lightweight glaive seems to be working well, fairly often getting criticals. I wonder if it's better to make a heavier one soon and get stun along with it, or get finesse and keep it, either way would let me get follow-through which could be nice.

Hmmn, smart. I always went for blocking and focused attack with my spear-specialists, and they usually fell apart around 500'. Zone of Control is a neat idea.

A focused attack build trying for criticals could be good, I think you'd want to go two-handed though to maximise the sides. A 4.5lb great spear is pretty easy to make, and you get d16s! I wonder if a spear assassin would work at all, you probably wouldn't get many criticals but damn would you get a lot of sides.

How do you find Polearm Mastery with Flanking?

It seems to me that Polearm Mastery and Focused Attack go naturally as both involve passing you turns, whereas Flanking and Dodging involve moving. ZOC can go well with Focused Attack as you can still attack while passing (same for Risposte).

Incidentally, the way the rules work, Flanking goes very well with Whirlwind Attack, as you do the whirlwind before moving so you don't end up with so many enemies attack you the next turn. Try it with a Weapon of Fury sometime... Flanking also goes well with Sprinting and with Charge. In general, Flanking is very fun...

I don't really combine polearm mastery with flanking, but I do still get plenty use out of it against single guys and stuff like dragonflies/wolves. I would probably use focused attack on this char too, but since I used it a lot on my last guy I don't feel like using it.

I think I'll go for whirlwind attack, I'm already generally trying to fight in the open.

I guess you've given up on Polearm Mastery for the time being (dependent on found weapons?). How are you finding Whirwind Attack with Flanking?

On 6.9.2012 22:21 clouded wrote:
It's been very effective. I was a bit nervous about fighting everything in the open, but with this combo I pretty much dance around everything and only a few things usually get to hit me. I've had some fun encounters fighting lots of different things at the same time and haven't actually had any dire situations due to getting in over my head.

Yeah I dropped my glaive since I figured Dramborleg would be something I'd probably want to use more later, and then Glend for general purposes.

Kind of a shame I've not been able to get a good balrog fight going. I didn't have fire res for Delthaur, and Vallach, who I had a little skirmish with and seemed to fair well against, was with some gwathrauko so I had to abandon.

Feeling pretty good about the char, though I'm a little worried about vampire lords in the future, my EV isn't super high for them and I don't have the will to avoid their drains. Possibly I won't want to hang around 950' so much, since I can't really steal loot from dragons either.

On 6.9.2012 23:09 clouded wrote:
Well, right after I started playing I got my wish for a balrog fight, I found Gothmog! Took rauko-bane just for him and there was domination.

On 6.9.2012 23:36 Scatha wrote:
Heh, nice. The 'Bane' ability is pretty powerful (though obviously situational), and I can see Rauko-bane becoming more popular for the Balrogs. How high is your bonus from it?

Did you try to fight him without it?

On 6.9.2012 23:49 clouded wrote:
I didn't try to fight him without it. I was getting +5 from it. I also chugged a dex potion and a con potion to be safe, but I didn't take much damage so that was unecessary.

I'm going to go down to the throne room now, I'm getting antsy fighting great drakes, and vampires are being a pain.

On 7.9.2012 00:10 Scatha wrote:
23 charges! That was quite special.

I guess (+8)[+8] is a pretty big deal against him when he doesn't (currently ...) have any way of doing anything to you if he can't hit in melee. Good luck for the throne room, anyhow!

On 7.9.2012 00:45 clouded wrote:
Thanks. It went awesome! The funnest throne room I've had so far. While still under tension, I walked right into the middle of the main hall and woke everything up, retreated back to the stairs, and went to town.

I only wish I'd used song of slaying... As I found out at the gates, it's ridiculous for a char like this!

On 7.9.2012 01:34 Scatha wrote:
Sounds fun! And congratulations on a win with a rather powerful character. Were you tempted to try for more Silmarils?

On 7.9.2012 01:43 clouded wrote:
Nah. I don't see much of a point going for more, especially if I'm not even killing Morgoth. I don't tend to care for scores.
