Okay, throne room. Nasty place, but I'm not dead yet. I do have one problem though. As a pacifist character, I'm not sure how to get the crown off. If I put him to sleep, like in the original story, will it fall off?

Here is my issue with characters like this -- even with the crown off, how do you get the silmaril out? No song of sharpness, no sharp weapons, and a melee score of 7?

PS nice going making it this far! I've never managed to pull it off, personally. I always bump into something by mistake.

Well, I guess it depends on what pops in the throne room. Personally, I might suggest a change wherein a crown-chopper always pops in a chest in the throne room. But that would make things a bit too easy, perhaps, so maybe it ought to be a hidden chest that this type of character is very good at finding.

With only 5 points in the experience pool, this might not go over so well unless there is a good chopper near at hand, but who knows. At least you gain a lot of experience from spotting things in the throne room.

Slow your button pressing down a tiny bit. I crashed a lot of characters that way until I slowed down just a wee bit, then it got easier. There may be an option to include an automatic delay, I'm not actually sure, but you might consider doing that if you're having problems.

With the ! of Dex, I have a melee score of 12, but that's still not much. If I quaff 2, do they stack? Probably not. I've exhausted all my sources of exp, so there's not much to do. I'm not sure how much damage I need to do to get one out, but I'm averaging around 50. I'm just gonna keep trying 'till it comes out. Nothing is threatening me, and I have a ton of food.

About 33,000XP is enough to scrape everything you need, including song of sharpness. You need to stop at much lower stealth, I don't go higher than 8 on pacifists (remember that silence is really good).

Anyway, good luck, I hope you can get the sil out. Be careful on the ascent, remember to use silence.

Potions of Strength can help too if you can find a heavy weapon in the throne room (often there is at least one axe).

Have you explored the entire level for experience? There are a number of hidden doors with treasures.

The protection should also be averaging 50, so it sounds like you'll probably get it out eventually.

The first Silmaril will be a bit easier to cut free in the next version.

This one is dead. I had broken the tension at some point about 1000 turns ago, but nothing messed with me. Eventually, I got discouraged(I realized that the number averaging 50 was protection, my average was about 13 >.<) and went looking for something that could help. Everyone woke up when I went and investigated the hall.

On 2.9.2012 22:00 Scatha wrote:
Hmm. I just did some rough calculations. I think you had of the order of a one in a million chance of getting a Silmaril out every turn, which is pretty bad.

With the reduced protection on the crown, that would drop to only a few thousand turns expected to get it out. With a very small investment in melee (including Finesse), perhaps a hundred.

Getting Power and using a potion of Strength and a herb of Rage with a big weapon like a great axe or mattock should also work in a non-ludicrous amount of time.

why can he not simply pick up the crown and carry it away?

Not that I didn't try. How strong would I have to be to carry it out?

I just realized something upsetting. I had a great axe, a few potions of strength, and an herb of rage. Unfortunately, when I used them, I didn't notice any real change(in the crown's protection rolls), and switched back to the short sword.

It always makes me laugh a bit that the crown gets an evasion roll (even if it does get +0 to that roll). I also wish that you could get the stealth bonus from assassination to melee...

I think that all your abilities go out the window for the silmaril combat rolls, though. It's just sharpness and your raw melee score that are used?
