I created this character after seeing debo's first stealth archer video and grasping the key insight behind Smithing: experience invested in smithing equipment can be MUCH cheaper than experience invested directly in skills and abilities.

Unfortunately, I've only found one forge (made Boots of Speed, Helm of Brilliance, and maybe the Leather Armor of Stealth; I can't even remember, it was so long ago) so far (I'm at 850' feet), and I've had to invest in other skills (particularly Stealth and Will) to survive.

Perhaps of interest: I believe this is the first game where I haven't put any points into Song by this depth.

There was a comment about Majesty being useless somewhere else on the ladder. I can say that at this level of Will (16) it tends to make cats run away as soon as they notice me, or I attack them.

Nice going. I'd think Idril's robe would be ideal for this kind of build -- are you wearing the armour for the Stealth, or the protection?

Unlike most abilities, Majesty doesn't scope so well through the game, and is relatively ineffective if you get it very early. Perhaps that's what the other comment was about?

On 30.8.2012 19:34 jdh@people.homeip.net wrote:
Could be. I found the robe relatively recently (second time finding it -- the first was at 50', I think!) but have been hanging onto the armor for the stealth value, since I have generally been avoiding encounters. If I was trying to kill something I'd probably swap to the robe but at this point it doesn't look like I'll be strong enough to try that. (Probably a good thing, since my high score list is littered with deaths where I got bored and started picking on dragons.)

If only I knew whether that Staff was Majesty or Slumber... but I still have quite a bit of time left.

This is really my first time putting a major investment in Will where I've gotten anywhere, too; usually I get what I want from (found) equipment.

On 30.8.2012 20:41 Philip wrote:
The robe is actually probably better at helping you avoid monsters by letting you dance around faster and avoid monsters running after you in corridors. Being faster or as fast as most monsters in incredibly useful. Also it is certainly possible that switching to the robe would make your armor lighter and thus give you a stealth point.

Vanish+Permanent Speed is amazing for stealth chars. I'd swap that nasty 'ol leather for the robe any day.

How do Majesty and Stealth interact? Do unwary/sleeping monsters "wake up" and then run away? Do they cry out for help when that happens?

Glad the videos helped you a bit. I'm probably the one you saw calling Majesty useless -- it was in the context of rushing to it as a survival tactic in the early/mid game. That doesn't seem to work. It does work well in the late-game, though, especially with a solid investment in Will.

I've killed 100+ characters and never seen that Robe of Idril. Amazing find.

I suspect those boots you're wearing now are an artefact -- I dunno if you even can find +3 evasion on non-artefact boots.

(I'm hoping that the ladder is smart enough to update my existing entry with this one.)

Found a few more forges. Messed up at the first one -- I meant to make guantlets of smithing +3 with weaponmaking. That's why I have two gauntlets now. :( The smithing interface seems to forget about abilities if you look at other menus like the skill bonuses.

Two more were two-use only, and one was in a room with stairs. I finally found one in a room with a Nameless thing and made a smithing hammer by stubbornness. Then I found an enchanted 3-use forge and made a Crown of Escaping, though I also plan to use it to loot 1000'. If I don't find another forge on this level, that's probably it for smithing this run. Hopefully will is high enough for my Staves of Slumber to work. :)

To answer the question about Majesty: it doesn't seem to wake anything up or attract notice. It just exerts a downward pull on aggression once you are noticed. I do wonder why it isn't (apparently) implemented as opposed Will rolls similar to Song of Elbereth instead of being a static modifier (if I am interpreting the description rightly).

And to everyone who said Speed is better: I concede. It's gotten me out of quite a few situations (though usually ones where I made dumb mistakes by running into things I didn't mean to).

On 31.8.2012 20:06 Scatha wrote:
Roughly speaking Majesty uses a static modifier because it's a static ability (Elbereth you can only keep singing for a little while). I think opposed rolls would make it a lot messier, though it might be possible to get something balanced to work.

That said, it's not clear why static bonus couldn't be dependent on both Will scores rather than just yours. There might be an improvement to be had there.

I was never brave enough to contemplate negative strength on smithing gear. I imagine yours means you are slow and possibly uneven to move?

Yes, it makes me slow, and I was unable to move at one point. Fortunately I have enough light and perception that I wake up in time to swap back, if I'm not dumb enough to try to continue despite the interruption. (Ururauko almost killed me when I ignored it. :))

Standing on a 3-use forge next to a tile with stairs. :)

I am more than open to suggestions for what to make. Feanorian Lamp of Brightness for more light radius, and arrows? Helm of Lore-Mastery? Something with Song of Sharpness? A stat-boosting weapon, if I can manage enough Smithing? Or would it be better not to risk anything right next to stairs?

On 3.9.2012 17:15 jdh@people.homeip.net wrote:
I ended up going with a Ring of Accuracy, a Ring of Protection and some more Arrows of Piercing. Amazingly nothing came up the stairs while I was making any of them. It took quite a few turns to get a Silmaril out, even with Sharpness. I was thinking about looking around to get another 100 exp so I could buy Focused Attack (I did buy Finesse, as you can see), but after 30-40 tries I got it.
