This has been an archetype I've been fooling around with for a few days now. It's not really much fun, a bit grindy and tough as hell, but I enjoy imagining the fight scenes... singing, dancing, waiting, stabbing... getting stronger every attack round until, death. I think it's a character that could become very powerful by endgame, but suffers from classic red mage problem during the difficult early game. Song of staying is tempting... the boost to protection, and the synergy with Will and protection might be something I weave, should I live to see the next 30,000 experience or so.

I've been playing with this type of character myself. Extremely slow, but I find them fun. I find that song of slaying is more helpful than the perception skills, so I've stopped taking them on the last few of these.

Well then to both of you: how strong do you find Concentration? Focused Attack has quite a few uses, and I'm satisfied with the general strength of that, but I'm simply not sure how good Concentration gets.

HM should know the answer about Concentration...IIRC, he used it to kill Morgoth some time ago...

I like concentration since the bonus adds up even if I use turns to wait so I can double up the bonuses with focused attacks. The melee bonus climbs quickly, as long as you stick to the same target. Five rounds seems to be about the break limit I've seen before I either have to do something besides fight or the enemy flees or dies.

I would rather it work like my initial notion of how I thought it would work... (I only half-read and one-quarter understand everything, as you've surmised by now, surely)... I figured concentration would give me an increasing bonus for every consecutive round spent attacking, regardless of target, like a blood lust sort of thing. That's probably too much sugar for a dime.

My Weirdo character built up an impressive melee bonus with focused attack/concentration/knockback against Morgoth. In his no-knockback 1v1 'alternate reality' fight, which I barely won, I experienced the same 4-5 round limit before I had to heal or clear rubble or something.

Much shorter, I think even with a lowly 10 perception score a free +5 buildup to melee is nice.

Yeah it's not bad, but the reason I don't use it so much on melee guys is because enemies constantly switch places with each other so it's hard to build it up against a lot of things. As I've said somewhere I think it's better for archers because you don't have to deal with that.

Thanks, the four-to-five-rounds information is useful data. I remember finding I couldn't build it up too far back when testing when we first introduced the abilities, but I wasn't sure if I was doing it wrong, and I haven't tested it much since them.

The fact that it works with both melee and archery definitely helps make it stronger, too. You can even shoot an enemy with a bow as it approaches just to build up your bonus to help you in melee.

I found Concentration okay on a spear-critical/throwing character, but not awesome—it's more fun than effective. You really need to use ranged attacks to make full use of it, but that's not a huge obstacle; it's not like you actually have to hit or anything.

I didn't like that I would sometimes unintentionally break concentration due to the free Polearm attack, mostly while I was trying to block or combine the bonus with Focused Attack. I presume that Zone of Control, Opportunist, and Riposte have the same problem.

The main drawback of getting Concentration, however, is that it raises the cost of Keen Senses/Listen or Lore-Keeper/Lore-Master, both vastly more valuable subtrees.

Also, if you're looking for a Melee bonus, I think in most cases you'd probably be better off with going for 13 Smithing and Jewelry for a pair of (+2) rings, and getting (+4) every attack rather than (+5) sometimes. This is less of an early-game option than Concentration, however.
