Not sure where to take this character. Sil looks to have several options for powerful builds - or rather, builds that would be powerful if the game weren't so unrelentingly brutal...

P.S. I love this game. I often has me quite literally on the edge of my seat.

One of the Orc warriors got in a lucky blow. Ouch.

Piece of advise: Don't go so splitty on the points in the early game. Pick 2-3 skills and put a bit more into them.

You can go far with e.g. 5 melee 5 evasion 5 stealth and maybe 2 in song just to get Elbereth. 2/5/4/3 might be a better beginning allocation for your stats, as well.

Take Charge as your first and only ability. That should get you though to 400' pretty easily :)

My favorite strategy is this:
5 Melee
7 Evasion

Get Charge first, then get Dodging and Sprinting. Charge + Sprinting works wonders.

Glad you're enjoying it.

There are a lot of possible builds, and I think quite a few viable starts. Melee and Evasion are particularly helpful for most characters at the start.

You did make a couple of odd choices here, which may not have helped you. Blocking doesn't do anything until you have a shield, so might be better to defer getting that. And Song of Slaying makes a lot of noise, so when you were singing that your Stealth investment wouldn't have been helping that much (but it would still reduce the radius at which monsters will notice you).

I didn't realize blocking required a shield...

I think my mistake here was going for a jack-of-all-trades character, which evidently doesn't work that well. That said, what works less well is taking on a gang of monsters that you can only see half of...

Also, note that getting surrounded by multiple monsters, even Orc Warriors, especially >2 of them and without Crowd Fighting, is really, really bad in Sil

I think jack-of-all-trades style can be made to work, but it's probably a bit harder than a combat specialist in the early game.
